About this listen
As a young schoolboy, David Essex dreamed of becoming a professional footballer and was signed up by his beloved West Ham United. But as a teenager, he developed a passion for music, which set him on a very different path, and ultimately led to superstardom. It wasn't, however, an easy start. Scraping a living on the edges of show business was a hard slog, and he endured many disappointments.
Then, aged 23, he went along to an audition for a new musical called Godspell and won the role (Jesus) that shot him to fame. Within a year he was starring in a smash hit film, That'll Be the Day, and had written and recorded his first number-one single, 'Rock On'. It was the start of Essex Mania, and a long journey of undreamt of adventure.
From Godspell to EastEnders, it's been an amazing life. And here is David's full incredible story - in his own words.

Beautifully written and narrated
I have been aware of David Essex since he started out. I just loved all his music. What I didn't realise was how varied his working life had been so far. This book was beautifully narrated by David himself, with love, emotion, compassion and decency. David sounds like one of life's "salt of the earth" characters. I admire the way he has kept his personal life out of the public eye. This book is well worth the read.

An Utter Delight
What did you like most about Over the Moon?
David's reading of it made it come alive and become believable in a way another person could not have achieved. It would have been a good listen but much better read by the person who lived it.
What did you like best about this story?
Everything. Although there was not too much personal detail, as in David's private life, I found it compelling, moving and learned so much about the man and his work that I didn't know. I have been a fan since the 1970s but did not know much about his charity work for one thing.
Have you listened to any of David Essex’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I love David's music but am not aware he has narrated any other books.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I would have loved to but listened on my daily commute. I didn't want it to end.
Any additional comments?
A wonderful life story told by a very passionate, caring and talented man. I will definitely go back to it and listen again in the future. Thoroughly enjoyable with no padding but lots of stories of David's life and work. He's also quite a private person who has managed to keep his private life out of the public eye to an extent which is all credit to him. I would recommend this 100%. I have never been a fan of Eastenders but was fascinated by David's account of his time on the soap and unlike another reviewer, didn't think too much time was spent on this part. It is, after all, a part of his career. Brilliant, well done David. I look forward to hearing about the next part of your life!

Excellent
Loved him in the 70s, love him now. I'm so glad he chose to read this himself! His voice telling his story is so warm and familiar (not to mention sexy!). A must for all David Essex fans.
