Summary

Shortlisted for the British Book Awards, Biography of the Year, 2009.

Julie Walters has been described as the nation's most popular actress and comedienne. She has been delighting us on screen and on stage for over 25 years and - thanks to her undoubted talent, infectious spirit and self-deprecating humour - we have taken her to our hearts.

Now she tells us her own story, in her own words. She was born in 50s Birmingham, daughter of an austere Irish Catholic mother. She was sent to school in a convent and from a young age always wanted to be an actress - but to appease her mother she first went into nursing. This didn't last for long, though, and she soon went to join The Everyman Theatre in Liverpool. West End success with Educating Rita followed, and she quickly replicated her success on film, playing opposite Michael Caine. Julie's collaborations with her close friend Victoria Wood have given us, among others, the unforgettable character 'Mrs Overall' in Acorn Antiques.

Julie has also starred in a range of films including Billy Elliot, Calendar Girls and Mamma Mia!, and she has recently charmed a new generation of fans playing "Mrs. Weasley" in the Harry Potter films.

This, her long-awaited autobiography, candidly reveals all the highs and lows in an extraordinary life. It is a remarkable piece of writing: funny, painfully felt, moving, warm, fiercely intelligent and - above all - wholly entertaining.

Full of LOL moments and heartfelt sentiment

A really enjoyable listen and pleased it was read by Julie herself to provide the emphasis as it was intended. Will listen again in a few months.

She’s just the most complex wonderful woman truly funny and profound!

I love the way Julie Walters is such a complex person and yet comes across us so humble her book was funny, witty interesting and a true parody of her life and how she lived from a very young age where she came from ,who she was , and why she was where she wanted to be , I’ve followed Julie for quite some years and seen most of her movies. I just love her as an actress and a person this book is endearing and interesting and of course comical . My saddest part - that it ended. I could’ve listened to her for hours longer.,

Wonderful, even the abridged version

I got this on a sale in Audible and should have paid more attention, it’s the abridged version. I love Julie Walters, and would happily listen to her for so many more hours! It’s brilliant, just try to find the unabridged!

GUTTED

It’s one of the best things I have ever listened to but was so disappointed when I realised it was only 4 chapters 😢
Julie Walters makes me proud to be female and British and her delivery of this is first class. I suspect it was compiled prior to Victoria Wood’s demise as JW speaks about her in the present tense and it really brought a lump to my throat 😢 I shall be seeking more JW titles for sure ☺️👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
