Really good story
I thoroughly enjoyed this story (by far the best from this author so far), loved the part where one of the characters views a holo-novel about the relationship of a Senator and a Jedi, and the struggles the Jedi has coming to terms with his emotions (remarking how far fetched the scenario was)! My biggest complaint is to Audible, that their list of the high republic books are not in chronological order. This should have been before most of the other books I have listened to in the series.

Incredamazing
Book gets better, didn’t like the voice at the start but then I got invested in the characters and story. Good performance and I enjoyed it throughout.
Shocking moments. And highly recommended. This story caught me off guard.

Not what you’re expecting!
From the previous THR entries I was expecting Path of Deceit to be a slightly gentler ride than the heart ripping of the larger novels.
But oh no. I won’t spoil anything but this book goes hard!

3 or 4/5 ruined at the end but overall enjoyable
Ok. I’ve said it before. But never thought I would again. Disney are at it again with virtue signalling. But my problem with this story is it develops Marta so much with Zink(?) padawan to then make her completely u-turn at the end which completely ruins her development. Same with Larna(?). Quite frustrating as there was no development for that. Was over and done with too quickly. Nonetheless very good story and I see where they are going with it. Just think they could have developed it a bit more. Don’t know why sexual relationships have to come into everything Star Wars when it becomes a pointless story element anyway AGAIN just virtue signalling. Enjoyable story and good to see where the nihil come from.

A prequel that answers a few questions
This is not an 'action' story. Although, there are some exciting set-pieces, this is actually a romance and a character study. People who don't like their Star Wars as slow burns where you spend a lot of time inside a character's mind just eavesdropping on their thoughts... yeah. You might want to give this book a miss. But, for the rest of you, this is a really wonderful Romeo and Juliette love story where all of the main characters are constantly in conflict because of their different worldviews and ideologies.
Honestly, I often sigh when the next book or comic on my reading list is written by Justina Ireland. By necessity her writing is very 'young'. I often find her stories simplistic and a chore to slog through. But, something about Tessa Gratton clearly brings out Justina's best. I can't wait to read whatever else they pair up on.
Did you ever wonder why Marchion Ro had a fascination with Lodan Greatstorm's lightsaber? We see a possible answer in this tale. Do you remember Marchion Ro's oblique references to the Path of the Open Hand and 'following the old rituals'? It was a conversation he had with his cousin on an icy planet. Well, this really fills out who the Path are, what their beliefs are and why anyone would join, and stay, with them. We also discover where the Gaze Electric came from and much, much more.
This is a solid foundation to phase II. But, is a major step back in the timeline of this universe. It is set before Marchion Ro, and presumably his father, were born.

More complicated than expected - in a good way
Thought Path of Deceit would be a bit of a simple yarn, but actually it contains some well written concepts and characters that set up an origin story that drops familiar hints of the first High Republic books.
The authors do a good job of making us like the characters we're meant to like - and in some cases at least understand the motivations of those we might not. The narrator injects respectable life into the main characters and does her best to give some uniqueness to what is quite a large cloud of tertiary others, and I don't begrudge her that some of them are a little similar. Sound effects and music are nicely arranged and neither too loud nor too quiet, backing up the narration without drowning it out.
Only minor complaint is that the story is very focused on a particular location, and it's a very low-tech backwater world, so we don't really get much Star Wars flavour to go with what are otherwise some enjoyable characters.
Won't spoiler anything, but this book does get rather sad towards the end. Left me more emotional than I would have expected. Which is usually a good sign about the quality of the writing. Will be looking out for other books by the same authors.

Excellent!
I started with Phase 2 of the High Republic. Path Of Deceit being the first book in the phase 2 series which takes place 150 years before the events of Phase 1 High Republic books.
I highly recommend this book for anyone that is a Star Wars fan or just getting into it The High Republic.
Narrator Erin Yvette does a great job. 10/10
