About this listen

Ten years ago, Peter Pan left Neverland to grow up, leaving behind his adolescent dreams of boyhood and resigning himself to life as Wendy Darling. Growing up, however, has only made him realize how inescapable his identity as a man is.

But when he returns to Neverland, everything has changed: the Lost Boys have become men, and the war games they once played are now real and deadly. Even more shocking is the attraction Peter never knew he could feel for his old rival, Captain Hook—and the realization that he no longer knows which of them is the real villain.

It was the most beautiful and touching story I listen in awhile

I am crying and smiling like a fool at the end. It is so touching. I am happy I found something light and heartwarming.

Great Story

Having read the book I decided to listen to the audiobook, the story is great and sweet, a brilliant story of Peter and Hook that makes me smile while listening. The narrator sometimes paused in unusual places but after a little bit I got used to it and found it overall very well done. I also enjoyed the way he expressed emotions through his narration.

A beautiful tale to transcend time.

I loved it. Every single chapter was incredible.

I felt that the use of language was fresh and the unique similies gave Neverland new life.

Austin Chant's tale of a trans character coming to terms with who they truly are is a sight to behold and is managed with the utmost respect and grace. Austin doesn't shy away from the hardships that they might have but handles the matter in a way that breathes hope into the underlying message of the story.

The side characters are managed very well, although I feel that Ernest and tinker bell could have been developed just a bit more.

Mark B. Knight does a magnificent job in narrating. In particular, Hooks voice is very believable and never fails to put a smile on my face.

I have re-listened to this story 5 times at the time I write this review and is a testament of how this book is a strong contender for my favourite book of 2019.

Amazing story given even more life by wonderful narration

One of those "carve my poor queer heart out with a spoon why don't you" stories. And the voice acting is superb.

oh! my heart!

As a trans guy, I needed to build myself up to listening to this. I'd had it recommended by many trans friends, but I'm wary of things that hit too close to home or trigger my dysphoria (which this did in places as is unavoidable with trans themed fiction).

The premise is just astounding in both complexity and simplicity. Wendy being Peter is such a wonderful way to make transness relatable to people who have grown up with this story.

The love story in this, and the implication that the "real" people in Neverland were all there because they couldn't be who they really were back home (trans, gay etc), was perfect and heart wrenching. Everything about this story, including the bits that did hit me close to home and caused me pain, made it the most affecting story I've read/listened to in a very long time.

whilst I wasn't struck by the narrator's choice of voices for the characters or the weird pauses as he hadn't read ahead, the story outweighed this greatly.

I'd recommend this book to anyone in any format, and especially to cis people, who might be able to related to queer issues through this lens.

Need a cup of tea now to help my heart recover from the pain and love.

A new favourite

Almost as soon as I finished listening to this book, I started it all over again. Chant has given his Peter and Hook such rich depth that this story stands unique over the great many Peter Pan retellings in the world. On a personal level books with such excellent LGBT representation are hard to come by and I was so thrilled to find that representation, written so naturally and so sensitively, here that I’ve been in the best mood I have been in months since finishing it. Do yourself a favour and download this book! 💚

Delightful

I personally am a huge fan of the original media and to have this version speak to the heart of Me when I didn't even realise that's what I wanted nearly brought a tear to my eye. This is a wonderfully written retelling although like many others, my only gripe would have been that this would be better if it was a touch longer. But the struggle Peter goes through and how he relates to his circumstances and his precious romance with James Hook...was everything.
