About this listen

This Audible Original Drama of Peter Pan takes listeners on a magical adventure with Peter, Wendy, Michael and John as they arrive in Neverland and take on Captain Hook with the help of Tiger Lilly and Tinker Bell.

The story begins at home in London during The Blitz, and Mary Darling is planning to evacuate her children to the countryside. However, her plans take an unexpected turn when a familiar face from her childhood returns...the one and only Peter Pan, the mysterious boy from Kensington Gardens. Intrigued by their mother’s friend, Wendy, Michael and John seek Peter Pan out, resulting in them being whisked off to Neverland and setting up home with Peter, Tinker Bell and the Lost Boys.

As Peter and his gang come up against the wickedly evil Captain Hook, their friendships and relationships are put to the test - can Wendy be honest with Peter about how she really feels, and will Michael and John return home without their sister?

Rupert Everett (The Happy Prince, My Best Friend’s Wedding) stars as Captain Hook alongside Adeel Akhtar (Four Lions, Killing Eve) as Smee, Gerran Howell (Catch-22, Emerald City) as Peter Pan and Eleanor Worthington Cox (Maleficent, Britannia) as Wendy alongside a full cast.

To mark the launch of this drama, Audible will be donating to Great Ormond Street Hospital, to whom J.M. Barrie unexpectedly and generously gifted his copyright of Peter Pan.

Performed by: Adeel Akhtar, Mariska Ariya, Catherine Bailey, Rupert Everett, Neil Frost, William Harper, Gerran Howell, Simon Kane, Mack Keith Roach, Rocco Padden, Richard Reed, Maya Shepelev, Louis Suc, Harry Tuffin and Eleanor Worthington-Cox.

J M Barrie and GOSH

J M Barrie's gift to GOSH

In 1929, J M Barrie unexpectedly and generously gifted his copyright of Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

Barrie supported GOSH for many years and was approached in 1929 to sit on a committee to help the Hospital build a much-needed new wing. Barrie declined but said he ‘hoped to find another way to help’. Two months later, the Hospital board was stunned when Barrie donated all his rights for Peter Pan to GOSH, explaining that he was inspired by the children at GOSH.

Through this gift the hospital receives royalties from every production of the play, as well as from the sale of Peter Pan books and other products. Barrie requested the amount raised for the hospital from Peter Pan never be revealed, and GOSH has honoured his wishes. In recognition of J M Barrie’s unprecedented generosity, and the exceptional work of the Hospital itself, the House of Lords sprinkled more fairy dust over GOSH in 1988, by voting overwhelmingly for a special clause in the UK’s Copyright Designs & Patents Act giving the hospital the right to a royalty from Peter Pan in perpetuity.

For over 90 years, the story of Peter and his battle against arch-enemy Captain Hook has enchanted children and adults alike, while continuing to support seriously ill children across the UK who are cared for at GOSH and beyond.

Poor adaptation Excellent performances

I think you have to be braced for a new interpretation of Peter Pan. Sadly for me, I don't think it has improved it. I think reading anything from another historical period it has to be accepted that social manners and mores have to be accepted. I ti is no good to try and craft it into something else. Rupert Everett gives an excellent performance as Hook, which pains me to say as I think he's a bit of a twit.

Good performance, but underwhelming adaption

A fun story, perfect for Christmas time listening, with a fantastic cast and performance. But it was just a bit dull in places, and it felt like nothing was really happening. My favourite parts were the beginning in London and the end with the pirate battle. Definitely worth the free price!

Entertaining version

Made me smile, and warmed my heart with memories of Christmases past. Rupert Everett's Captain Hook is a beautiful portrayal.

Not the original but a winner

I love the original story & this is not it, however this adaptation is a wonderful tour de force! Great performance from Rupert Everett-a superior pantomime villain! Would recommend to children of all ages 1-99 years. A few plot holes-there are no lost girls because they are too sensible to fall out of their prams & then low & behold Tiger Lily & her troupe of lost girls! Highly recommended.

So sweet

Such a nice audio version of the classic Peter Pan. The narrators did a good job with the pacing and giving the characters their own personalities.
