This is an interesting book centering around a firefighter, Jason Mondy. It starts with his live in girlfriend moving out and taking almost all the furniture and belongings with her, then things spiral downwards, a young recruit is killed and an ex-firefighter is responsible, Jason finds himself accidentally the 'poster boy' for the service and is thrust into the limelight, which he hates, also the way that emergency response is carried out is changing which means that Jason has to improve his medical skills.
To get some respite he returns home to his adoptive mother's house, but even there he is hit with the bombshell that he had a younger brother which he had completely forgotten about in the stress of the fire that had orphaned him at the age of 7. He becomes obsessed with finding details of this supposedly dead child.
The story becomes a bit far-fetched at this point and there are so many coincidences that quite a major suspension of belief is required, but it does lead to a big revelation about how his mother died.
I enjoyed the description of fire station life, so different to the way that first responders in the UK are organised and there are some good characters.
The narration must have been good, because I was largely able to ignore it, it fitted in with the story so well.

There are so many interesting things in this story that it totally kept my attention throughout! Have you ever wondered how a day at a firestation looks, or how the firefighters keep busy during the day? You will be able to have an inside look in this book. Two brothers that are separated after their home burns down is the main plot of the story but there are so many sub plots you always have something happening to keep you involved in the characters lives. There are parts of this that are so sad your heart breaks for the characters involved. As Investigations take place you are right there in the middle of it feeling the same way the characters do. I love how the author tied the whole book up beautifully! Not the first book I have listened to of this author's and definitely won't be the last! I have to give a slap on the back to narrator Keith Jedlicka for a story wonderfully brought to life. I received a free code for this book from Audiobooks Unleashed and the publisher. This review is my own honest opinion.
