About this listen

Jimmy Crocker, a.k.a. Piccadilly Jim, is a lively young American ex-newspaper man who meets Ann Chester, the girl of his dreams, in London. Problem is, Jim once wrote a bad review of her first book of poetry. They set sail to New York together with Ann still not knowing he's the dastardly critic! Add a brilliantly colourful Manhattan setting, an unlikely butler, odd spies, eccentric 'tecs, scientific secrets, plus an odious boy called Ogden, and the ingredients are here for one of P.G. Wodehouse's most dazzlingly comic feasts.

Wonderfully funny listening that keeps up a swift pace, thanks to the classic combination of Martin Jarvis reading Britain's finest comic writer, P.G. Wodehouse.

What made the experience of listening to Piccadilly Jim the most enjoyable?

Martin Jarvis as narrator is an inspired choice, easily my favourite actor for reading PGW. He brings the words to life with such evident enjoyment, giving each character an accent so finely tuned to their own idiosyncrasies you are never lost in this dense plot of intrigue and counter intrigue. Piccadilly Jim is a comic classic with many unlikely escapades to keep the reader highly entertained

What did you like best about this story?

The plot is constantly delivering new trips and twists to keep the action flowing

What about Martin Jarvis’s performance did you like?

He is a master of comic accent, his Americans are particularly fun and well realised.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Theoretically you could, and I might do on second and third sittings in future.

Deliciously Convoluted

PG Wodehouse wrote a lot more than the Jeeves and Wooster stories and a lot of them are funnier. Martin Jarvis is one of my very favourite readers. He moves effortlessly between the characters, giving them all distinct and believable voices.

Brilliant narration

Both Martin JARVIS and P G Wodehouse are genuises. This is a fabulous book, and superbly read

Simply joyous

This stand-alone Wodehouse novel wasn’t one that I was familiar with. The ending is predictable but as with the greatest Wodehouse novels the journey is the fun. The scene of Jim’s dad playing a gangster whilst also imitating a butler is one of his finest. Beautifully read (as always) by Martin Jarvis.

It’s the journey not the destination

What a combination! Wodehouse wit and Martin Jarvis's perfect delivery. Guaranteed to cheer you up. Warning: may cause laughing out loud on public transport. Be careful!

Don't miss this one!

Very fun and entertaining listen. Martin Jarvis does an excellent job differentiating the colourful array of characters who are woven together in one of Wodehouse’s whimsical webs. A thoroughly diverting plot thickens until quite beyond even the most suspicious of the poor fools as they busily tangle themselves up in further threads!
