About this listen

Orphaned Carmen is sixteen, newly homeless and will do almost anything to survive and keep her and her kid brother safe, together, and out of foster care. Ollie, also sixteen, has a life that's all about parents, school pressure, friends, and dreams of summer. The two fall into each other's orbit, and one kiss changes everything. Ollie is captivated . . . but then Carmen vanishes. When they cross paths months later, everything is different.

A young adult queer romance that looks at what we're prepared to sacrifice for those we care about.

Contains mature themes.

There were so many things I loved about this book, although it deals with some really serious subject matters like child neglect and foster care. For a start, it was so diverse with a WLW relationship as a subplot between two women of colour (our FMCs). One of the secondary characters was also a trans woman, and another was aro-ace. With all this, I was prediposed to like the book and it didn't disappoint.

It is an emotional journey from start to finish with both FMCs struggling with their own personal demons. One from poverty with a neglectful mother, and another from a stable household with fantastic parents. But they both get their share of tragedy and strife to overcome. It did make me cry, more than one, both happy and sad tears.

It is very mature for a YA book in terms of subject matter (no spice) and really enjoyable even as an adult.

A beautiful, dark, challenging book
