Summary

If you know Phil Hellmuth then you either love him or hate him!

His rants, tirades, and lines like "I can dodge bullets, baby" and "If it weren't for luck, I'd win them all" are epic and have earned him the nickname "Poker Brat." However, whether you love him or hate him, he is undoubtedly the greatest poker player of our time. Phil is a global poker icon who holds every record at the World Series of Poker, including an extraordinary 14 world championships.

In Poker Brat Phil paints a picture of his early Midwestern life, in which he struggled mightily in grade school and high school, but always had aspirations to do something great. Phil takes you from the low lows of his life to the high highs, and shows you how he developed an unhealthy ego along the way, which eventually turned into his "Poker Brat" persona.

In Poker Brat, Phil shares his own powerful tips and techniques, the ones that he used to set his goals, and then he shows how he achieved those goals as he climbed to the summit of the poker world.

I thought the story of phil was interesting and he gets me right in the mood for poker. Phil is great at reading his own book also.

Best Poker Autobiography Ever

I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to write as a poker enthusiast. This is by far the best poker autobiography I have ever read.

Easy listen

Really good autobiography for anybody who is into poker or is a fan of Hellmuth.

There were a few times where he ended up going over hand histories which isn't always easy to follow but overall, it's a great pick up.

Enjoyable, easy listen.

As a beginner in poker, I found this to be a good book. It’s easy to listen to here and there. I like that Phil reads the book and he really gives it his best. It’s good to hear him telling his own stories and I found myself getting lost in them along with him. I know a lot of people find him obnoxious and overbearing but the moments where that comes through pale in comparison to the moments that he is genuinely revealing about his own life and his mistakes and flaws.

There isn’t a great deal of learning to be had, but it’s still useful to to hear him play out many of the hands he has been involved in, and he does go through a lot of them to be fair - so that’s good.

Overall you I finished the book knowing more about Phil as both a player and person, and the poker world in general and how it works/used to work. I also found myself wanting to play more and better poker.

Definitely worth a listen. I wonder how it would compare as a written book.

Very good book. inside story.

Very good book. inside story.
well I liked the player, I think you can discount many of the brat acts on T.V. Overdone for T.V. DOH. who knew.

being a poker player myself, (not played in 8 years) I was very surprised by the big swings he took, I was a decent player online.
But in Phils book, I recognised my number 1 failing. Not poker skills. those were good. MONEY MANAGEMENT. you.
You and me Phil, same issue lol... I realise now money management is critical, better to be an average player with excellent
money management skills... i seemed to have learned that lesson outside poker, also i seemed also to have taken the positive mental attitude with me. i don't need play poker for money I made mine. that attitude i built playing poker, backing myself, taking shots, and focusing on what i want. not what i don't want WORK.
Its a book about poker, but its really a book about "A journey" a man with issues, becomes a MAN. A hard thing to do in this day and age... great book Phil, keep them coming...

Starts well, gradually deteriorates.

Enjoyed the early chapters, was interesting to hear how Phil discovered success. As it merges into the modern game in the mid 2005s it just becomes a brag fest and a way for Phil to give his investments some publicity and a chapter listing the accolades of the people in his home game is the most pointless. Still, the first half was enjoyable and is well read by Phil himself. Found myself warming to him vs his TV persona.
