About this listen

A routine commercial flight disappears over the North Pole. No wreckage. No transponder signals.

Mitch Matthews is writer struggling to make ends meet when his wife's brother offers them a first-class seat on a flight from Hong Kong to New York. When his wife needs to stay behind, it becomes an opportunity for some quality daddy-daughter time with his five-year-old Lilly. At check-in, they run into a strange Norwegian arguing with a huge Russian. A mysterious redhead is guarding a package in the business lounge. But everything is fine...right up until the event.

Within hours of Allied Airlines 695 disappearing, a massive international search is launched. Aircraft and ships are dispatched from Russia, America, Canada, and Norway. How can a modern airliner simply vanish in one of the most heavily monitored places on Earth?

Global tensions rise. The media and grieving families whip into a frenzy. The armed forces of America and Russia tip the world toward the brink of an apocalyptic war.

Weeks later, found on the ice in a chance discovery, the journal of Mitch Matthews reveals the incredible truth behind the disappearance of Allied 695, and what really happened in the Polar Vortex.

My overall rating for this book is because, even though it has a great plot line and an unusual reason for the accident/attack, the overall plot is played out far too slowly. However, this could also be down to the reader, having/giving a lacklustre performance. Better read/acted it may have been a different story for my rating.

Too slow overall

Polar Vortex starts off as your generic survival thriller but slowly unravels a net of conspiracies that challenge the reader/listener to think beyond the survival narrative of the lead character and reflect on current global affairs.

The readers performance is another stand out. Heartfelt and grounded with the right amount of pregnant pauses and rushed narration wherever tension tightens.

Cold conspiracies

I don't know why I had some hesitation when purchasing this one, may be due to it not being a genre I usually go for but I'm glad I did get it.

while the story was very good the performance was world class.

A surprisingly good listen.

This story was definitely not in the genre that the title, cover and sample led me to believe.

If you are looking for a sci-fi or supernatural story, look elsewhere.

As a story about survival, it's OK.

Brilliant strong storyline, with some intriguing characters, and plenty of twists and turns
The narration was spot on!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book

EXCELLENT AND VERY THOUGHT PROVOKING!

enjoyable thriller. predictable in chunks, but enjoyable. I was uncomfortable with the sickly 'Lilly pad' and some scenes were far from healthy or likely. otherwise good. just a lingering unease that never quite left..

brilliant..buuuut. some uncomfortable scenes.

I got this as a freebie with my audible membership. I always get caught up in a novel, with an audio book it’s important to have a good narrator in my opinion this makes or breaks the story. I really enjoyed the way Tom Taylorsons brought the characters to life. The plot Mathew Mather created seemed straightforward and the story was well told with a bit of jumping around the timeline. It wasn’t until the last 45 minutes of the narration that I realised my assumptions were wrong and again 20 minutes later. I’m not going to create a spoiler alert but this was one of the best stories I’ve listened to in the last few years, as I have over a thousand titles in my audible library that’s saying something This won’t be the last of Mathers novels I’ll try.

Roller coaster of emotions
