About this listen

At an annual party to celebrate the success of the racing season, everything seemed to be running well to form, including the need for more champagne. Then a runaway horsebox ploughed into the marquee. A witness to the terrible death and destruction, wine merchant Tony Beach knows it is just one of those tragic accidents. But when his expert advice is called into play over sub-standard alcohol in a local night club, connections start to click, and another person dies, horribly.©1984 Dick Francis (P)2014 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd. Great Stuff

Gripping story, elegantly read by Tony Britton. The sheer decency, generosity and touching humanity of the main characters makes you long for a past age. And thrown in, as you would expect, a host of fascinating detail regarding the racing world - and a little of the wine-producing world too. But overall, a gripping, satisfying listen.

If the sound level of recording was fixed….

If the sound level of recording was fixed…. This is obviously an old recording. The quality of the production is far below what I expect from an Audible book.

Despite that, I enjoyed the story and the narration was excellent. It was the editing and post production that let it down.

Beautifully read and written

The slightly poor sound quality didn’t bother me, the reading is just so good and the quality of the writing is second to none.
Some great life lessons thrown in as a bonus to the enjoyable tale.

Poor quality sound

What did you like most about Proof?

Usual good Dick Francis story.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Tony Britton?

Tony Britton is a good narrator, but it was marred by the poor sound quality which varied in loudness and had a tinny echoey effect.

This is one of the best Dick Francis books. I loved it years ago and loved it again now. Vintage!

A perennial favourite

I have listened to this wonderful reading by Tony Britton a couple of times before, and it always holds me. The characters come alive and I am swept into a world without mobile phones or the Internet, but still with the horror of merciless villains. I love it. And it has led me onto more of Dick Francis's novels, particularly those with Sid Halley as the protagonist.

Brilliant

As enjoyable as ever even if you have no interest in either horses or the wine trade! The writing draws you in from the start. Really well read.
