Summary

Between volunteering for the annual pumpkin festival and coaching her girls to the state soccer finals, high school teacher TJ Jensen finds her good friend Zachary Collins dead in his favorite chair. When the handsome new deputy closes the case without so much as a "why" or "how", TJ turns her attention from chili cook-offs and pumpkin carving to complex puzzles, prophetic riddles, and a decades-old secret she seems destined to unravel.

A halloween treasure

I enjoyed this book. There was a lot going on in this book, especially for the start of a new series, and a lot of it seemed not be related to the mystery (introducing the town's people) but somehow it held my interest and it all comes together in the end. The mystery was fun with the treasure hunt of clues and plenty of suspects. I had guessed who the killer was but I think that is because I am naturally suspicious and something clicked, so that wasn't a surprise but that doesn't mean the author didn't surprise me when all the connections was revealed. The home life drama added depth to the characters and I loved Tj's sisters. Glad I discovered this series because I will be joining them again.

Tj is surprised when she goes to check on a friend, to find him dead. It's not surprising the elderly man died, it's more the fact that he had had company. The reclusive man had shut himself off from people and Tj thought she was his only friend. When the police are quick to close the case, Tj can't help but think something's not right with Zachary death. Who was the mystery person? Tj and Zachary use to love playing puzzles and it seems the biggest puzzle he left behind was who killed him? The more Tj investigates, the more secrets she finds out, making her wonder just how well she knew her friend.
I like the narrator. She used different voices to bring the characters to life making the story easy to follow
