About this listen

Russian defectors are dying and only Charles Thoroughgood can make it stop

‘He saw Cleaner Bob arrive that morning, the morning of his death.’

In the peaceful towns and villages of England, Cleaner Bob is washing windows, and people are dying in sudden and unexpected circumstances. When it becomes clear that the victims have a common history as Russian defectors, foul play is suspected and a hunt begins to locate their assailant, the lethal poison that killed them, and the mole who is leaking their locations.

In a race against time, only one man has the connections and experience to crack the case before more people perish. Charles Thoroughgood, former head of MI6, is enjoying retirement in the Oxfordshire hamlet he calls home when the call comes in. A man of duty, he agrees to take part in a mission that will lead him into the heart of enemy territory and threaten to undermine the very values he holds most dear.

Tense, engrossing and terrifyingly believable, the latest Charles Thoroughgood novel is a timely and brilliant reminder that Alan Judd is a master of the spy thriller and a writer of the very highest quality.

Not really anything to complain about just wish it had been longer! The narrator choice was perfect for the genre and Alan Judd's style of writing. I wish he narrated each book to be frank. the location descriptions, some of which I am familiar were spot on, you felt Alan had been there. I've started at the end of the Charles Thoroughgood books, lazy on my part so I'm off to see if I can find the first in the series. Thanks to audible, yet another great detective genre to take my mind off the perils of real life! Catherine

Great characterisation, diligent detailed speech sections and the descriptive passages of locations whether in the UK or abroad.

This is very gentle for a spy thriller. The nearest thing to a car chase is someone trying to follow a Russian in unsuitable heels. This is in no way a criticism! I loved the characters and realistic pacing. I liked the unheroic emphasis on admin being important and the thing was likeable all round.

No flashy action

This was simplistic and braindead. No interesting revelations. Waited for a twist that never came. Apparently a satisfactory ending is everyone dying who is involved in the case. Nice and clean I suppose. Written by someone who thinks women leaders are useless because they go on maternity leave and offices supporting their LGBT+ employees is ridiculous. Mental health support is for weaklings etc etc. Jingoistic garbage. Being a Le Carre fan I was hoping for a substitute but really sorry I wasted my time on this garbage.
