About this listen

The eighth installment in this cozy mystery series features Daisy Dalrymple at the Museum of Natural History, a place of fascination - and murder.

In the summer of 1923, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple makes what should be an uneventful research trip to the Museum of Natural History quite an eventful day - with her nephew, Derek, and her soon-to-be stepdaughter, Belinda, in tow. But as she interviews the various curators for her article on the museums of London, she soon discovers that the Museum of Natural History is a hothouse of professional rivalry and jealousy. Much resentment exists, particularly between Dr. Smith Woodward, the keeper of geology, responsible for the fossil collection, and Dr. Pettigrew, the keeper of mineralogy, responsible for the museum's fabulous gem collection.

On a later trip, as closing time nears, Daisy hears two voices followed by a tremendous crash and rushes into the next hall to discover Dr. Pettigrew dead - murdered amid a pile of dinosaur bones.

Daisy's fiancé, Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard, is assigned to investigate, and together they must unravel a most baffling case of missing gems, dispossessed European royalty, professional rivalry, and a murder most foul.

Huge improvement in narration

Thank goodness Blackthorn have now found a narrator who can speak ‘proper’ English. Very enjoyable

Better narrator. Makes a huge difference. Fun and engaging story for a free book with audible.

Great fun!

Really enjoyed this one. It’s a lovely series. Cosy detective stories are a lovely distraction and a great pick-me-up, and this one was just perfect. And I always enjoy the little period details. Have not heard the phrase “guts for garters” since I was a child!!

Another murder solved by Daisy Dalrymple !

Daisy does it again !! I have to admit to really enjoying these cosy murder mysteries ! And the narrator is definitely learning how to pronounce English words now.

Thankfully a new narrator

I nearly gave up on these books thanks to the awful narration of the first 7 by someone I assume is American doing a bad English accent and the most bizarre and terrible pronunciations ever. I ended up skipping and leaving it on in the background.
These are fun, lightweight in a good way books and now narrated better I can get more into the stories.

Love these, but some pronunciations have me squirming

I’m very much enjoying this series, but so wish they were read by an English woman. So many words are pronounced incorrectly, eg in this book Michaelmas which came out as Michael-mass. She also read bought as brought, “Alex brought concert tickets”! And I do wish that uniformed constables would stop saluting Alex. Nobody salutes someone in plain clothes, only senior officers in uniform. There have been many more mispronunciations in the series, but I didn’t list them, trying to get past them to enjoy the story.

Better narration

Love these books, and what a relief to have a narrator with a proper English accent! The earlier books in the series were ruined by an appalling “american-trying-to-be-English” who had no idea the English speak or how English place names were pronounced. They are such fun books, they deserved a decent narrator.

Great narrator and nice story

Fabulous narrator. Massive improvement to following the stories when wincing at the mangling of English is not involved. I enjoyed the story. I quite like a cosy drama.

The marvellous Daisy... At it again

I'm a huge Daisy fan and the addition a good performance by the narrator only adds to the pleasure.
