Summary

For a moment Wilson froze and looked at the white-helmeted pilot who sat high on the nose of the colossal fighter. Across the small void, he saw the pilot's eyes peer over his mask. Dark, chilling eyes. Wilson kicked right rudder to slide closer and jam any chance for a bandit gunshot. When the bandit pulled all the way over, almost on its back but in control, he cursed in frustration at what he knew was coming next. The hostile fighter reversed over the top in a negative-g maneuver, his nose tracking down on Wilson like a falling sledgehammer in slow motion. Horrified, Wilson realized he faced an imminent snapshot. With the little air speed he had, he inverted his Hornet to avoid the attack. His aircraft still rolling, Wilson saw that the monster had another weapon at its disposal.

Critic reviews

"A page turner... Raven One makes a major contribution to aircraft carrier history during difficult deployments. The author has skillfully woven the intense combat maneuvers with a fascinating human interest story." (Naval Historical Foundation)

Outstanding aviation novel

A truly excellent book with gripping story and lightning fast action.

The plot had me from the word go and the voice actor is excellent.

Enjoyable for a very specific audience

I really enjoyed this, but mainly because I am learning to fly a (virtual) Hornet in DCS World. There is a lot of detail on procedures and controls that would probably slow things down too much for the general reader but for me we’re fascinating and gave a bit of colour and detail to things I had been reading about elsewhere, as well as getting a better idea of what the pilots get up to when they’re not in the cockpit.

I did grow to enjoy the characters, and found myself rooting for them. My only criticisms here are that there is little ambiguity - each is basically either a goody or a baddy with no redeeming features. Also it is hard to criticise the writing of female characters when I am male myself, but they spend much of their non-flying time thinking about men - it is a little bit cringey at times.

The flying scenes are great if you have enough background knowledge to understand what is going on. Even the non-combat scenes can have an enormous amount of tension.

Highly recommended if you are interested in naval aviation, but probably not otherwise.

Simply superb

As an avid Naval Aviation fan this audiobook was extremely enjoyable to listen to. The author does a fantastic job of taking you out of your own life and in to the shoes of a fighter pilot, I really felt part of the Squadron and part of the air group it was a fascinating look in to what life on board a carrier might be like.
I can’t recommend this book enough to any aviation fan, as far as I’m concerned it’s a must have!
