Summary
Long-listed, Barnes and Noble Best New Books of the Year 2023
Long-listed, New York Magazine Best Books of the Year 2023
One of BookPage's Best Audiobooks of 2023
"Loftus is a charming narrator...goofy, engaging, and always game to do a silly voice."—The New York Times
"There’s something terribly irresistible about her narration, which is often incredibly funny."—BookPage
Part travelogue, part culinary history, all capitalist critique—comedian Jamie Loftus's debut, Raw Dog, will take you on a cross-country road trip in the summer of 2021, and reveal what the creation, culture, and class influence of hot dogs says about America now.
“Wise and funny”—ANDY RICHTER • “Gonzo yet vulnerable”—GABE DUNN • “Hot dog Moby-Dick”—BRANSON REESE • “Revealing, funny, sad, horny, and insatiably curious”—SARAH MARSHALL • “A wild ride”—ROBERT EVANS • “Deeply incisive and hilariously honest”—JACK O’BRIEN
Hot dogs. Poor people created them. Rich people found a way to charge fifteen dollars for them. They’re high culture, they’re low culture, they’re sports food, they’re kids' food, they’re hangover food, and they’re deeply American, despite having no basis whatsoever in America's Indigenous traditions. You can love them, you can hate them, but you can’t avoid the great American hot dog.
Raw Dog: The Naked Truth About Hot Dogs is part investigation into the cultural and culinary significance of hot dogs and part travelogue documenting a cross-country road trip researching them as they’re served today. From avocado and spice in the West to ass-shattering chili in the East to an entire salad on a slice of meat in Chicago, Loftus, her pets, and her ex eat their way across the country during the strange summer of 2021. It’s a brief window into the year between waves of a plague that the American government has the resources to temper, but not the interest.
So grab a dog, lay out your picnic blanket, and dig into the delicious and inevitable product of centuries of violence, poverty, and ambition, now rolling around at your local 7-Eleven.
“One of the freshest and most insightful new comedic voices of this decade.”—LINDSAY ELLIS
A Macmillan Audio production from Forge Books.
Critic reviews
"Raw Dog will leave you nourished."—BuzzFeed
“Jamie Loftus is a wise and funny storyteller, and her enthusiasm is inspiring. There’s so much about hot dogs that you need to know, and Jamie is here to teach you!”—ANDY RICHTER, actor and writer
“A moving, gorgeously written and lovingly researched dive into the world of hot dogs, American nationalism, in-group scandal, and delicate human relationships. This gonzo yet vulnerable trek is meaty, fun, critical, and evocative all at once. Jamie Loftus is the hot dog generation's Joan Didion.”—GABE DUNN, New York Times bestselling coauthor of I Hate Everyone But You

Incredible mixture of story, history & everything else.
Taking a humble hotdog & managing to muse both hilariously & poignantly on love, family, gentrification, immigration, capitalism, tradition & travel is honestly genius.

Strangely political + bitter history of hotdogs
ok - but very dark and depressed in general. written during the lockdowns while her relationship was breaking down so that probably accounts for the tone. I was expecting a lighter book instead i found the author is hardwork to spend time with. well researched though.

Hot dog, this is a good book
The incomparable Jamie Loftus has written a book which is part documentary, part food review, part breakup memoir. And somehow it WORKS. She’s an excellent writer, a great audiobook reader and a very funny person.

Leftist hot dog humour
Dark humoured, hot dog-oriented road trip across the USA. What’s not to love? Has a cathartic, funny, bleak yet hopeful vibe. Loftus makes me laugh… I found myself in the mood to listen to this book a lot and was disappointed when it finished. Highly recommended

Excellent
This book manages to be about everything while being very much about the one thing. The humour and insight you might expect if you're a fan of Jamie's podcasts is absolutely present! Did skip the most detailed chapter regarding manufacture of hotdogs, which is well signposted.

Amazingly rich and funny
This book is a fantastic combination of history, travelogue, insight and humour. Jamie is a brilliant narrator and takes you on such a wonderful journey, all across America in a unique point in history. The story has everything, though there’s one slight omission that is understandable. She doesn’t mention her time in Grand Rapids even once.

I want to eat this book
As a vegan who lives in the UK I really thought this book wasn’t for me but as a fan of Jamie Loftus I thought I’d at least get some kinda kick out of it.
AND I WAS RIGHT.
I think this has everything you want from a book/audiobook (road trips, heart break, gender pickles) as well as extreme fine details about hot dogs.
I can’t wait to enjoy the only good vegan hot dog into (beelzebab in Brighton) whilst dropping hot facts to my friends around me between every bite.

Hot Podcast Queen With Mustard On!
Hot Podcast Queen With Mustard On!
When i saw that Jamie Loftus was narrating her book on Audible i didn't even have to think about buying this!
She is without doubt the Podcast Queen. Her Podcasts are literally the best with her beautiful voice over uniquely interesting themes all carried out with such deep thorough research.
It's unbelievable how much work goes into the genius of Lolita, Mensa, Aack Cast & Ghostchurch.
So what a super treat it was to see that Raw Dog, her very own book was here and i get to hear her narrate this for 9 hours 38 minutes! Everything she touches turns to mustard gold and she reads it just like her Podcasts!
Very informative as always mixing seriousness with great humour and I'm guessing she's quite anti hotdog.
Absolutely brilliant!
