About this listen
A brand-new recording of the classic work, narrated by Holliday Grainger, star of The Borgias and The Capture.
On a trip to the South of France, a shy young woman falls in love with Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower. Although his proposal comes as a surprise, she happily agrees to marry him. But as they arrive at her husband's home, Manderley, a change comes over Maxim, and the young bride is filled with dread. Friendless in the isolated mansion, she realises that she barely knows him. In every corner of every room is the phantom of his beautiful first wife, Rebecca, and the new Mrs de Winter walks in her shadow.
Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with the other woman. An international bestseller, Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity.
'Rebecca is a masterpiece' GUARDIAN
'Excellent entertainment . . . du Maurier created a scale by which modern women can measure their feelings' STEPHEN KING
The only thing I knew about Rebecca was that it was the inspiration behind the song Tolerate It, so I had a certain understanding of what the book was about, but the reality was so much more than that. The narrator did an absolutely amazing job. I could not wait for each new chapter - and chapter 20 in particular had me in complete shock from start to finish.
I wouldn't call the characters particularly likeable, but they were certainly engaging, and there was some interesting character growth for the second Mrs de Winter which I really enjoyed.
I can completely see why Rebecca is considered a classic. It is a must read. If like me you're hesitant when it comes to classics, I strongly recommend you listen to the audiobook and give it a try. You won't regret it.

Others have commented that some sentences are repeated, but in the whole book I only heard one incidence of this, which is obviously an editing problem. It was in the chapter when the narrator goes to visit Maxim's grandmother. No other incidences were noted.
I have read this book many times, since I was a teenager and always enjoyed it. However, for me, the best part of this recording came at the end of the last chapter, in the chapter entitled "Afterward" which delved into discussing the deeper meanings behind the characters and their actions. I always identified with the younger, second Mrs. DeWinter and saw Rebecca as quite an evil character and this piece gave me a different interpretation of the characters' actions and I found it fascinating.
The narration is superb. Ms. Grainger has a beautiful, softly enchanting voice and it was a pleasure to listen to. Thank you.
