About this listen

A brand-new recording of the classic work, narrated by Holliday Grainger, star of The Borgias and The Capture.
On a trip to the South of France, a shy young woman falls in love with Maxim de Winter, a handsome widower. Although his proposal comes as a surprise, she happily agrees to marry him. But as they arrive at her husband's home, Manderley, a change comes over Maxim, and the young bride is filled with dread. Friendless in the isolated mansion, she realises that she barely knows him. In every corner of every room is the phantom of his beautiful first wife, Rebecca, and the new Mrs de Winter walks in her shadow.
Not since Jane Eyre has a heroine faced such difficulty with the other woman. An international bestseller, Rebecca is the haunting story of a young girl consumed by love and the struggle to find her identity.

Rebecca is a shining example of why I need to stop pre-judging classics as stuffy and boring. I never would have read this book were it not gifted to me, and that would have been such a mistake. I opted for the audiobook, as I so often do when my hopes are low, and the entire experience blew me away.

The only thing I knew about Rebecca was that it was the inspiration behind the song Tolerate It, so I had a certain understanding of what the book was about, but the reality was so much more than that. The narrator did an absolutely amazing job. I could not wait for each new chapter - and chapter 20 in particular had me in complete shock from start to finish.

I wouldn't call the characters particularly likeable, but they were certainly engaging, and there was some interesting character growth for the second Mrs de Winter which I really enjoyed.

I can completely see why Rebecca is considered a classic. It is a must read. If like me you're hesitant when it comes to classics, I strongly recommend you listen to the audiobook and give it a try. You won't regret it.

Incredible Narration and a Great Story

A brilliantly conceived and crafted story. In the postscript, finding out a bit more about the authors personal life, I appreciated some of the themes even more.

One of the best books ever

Absolutely outstanding. Sublime story and I absolutely loved the narrator. She was perfect. This brought Rebecca to life for me. Thank you

The perfect voice

I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook, despite a couple of rather weird-sounding pronunciations. These were few and far between and definitely did NOT detract from my overall enjoyment.

Others have commented that some sentences are repeated, but in the whole book I only heard one incidence of this, which is obviously an editing problem. It was in the chapter when the narrator goes to visit Maxim's grandmother. No other incidences were noted.

I have read this book many times, since I was a teenager and always enjoyed it. However, for me, the best part of this recording came at the end of the last chapter, in the chapter entitled "Afterward" which delved into discussing the deeper meanings behind the characters and their actions. I always identified with the younger, second Mrs. DeWinter and saw Rebecca as quite an evil character and this piece gave me a different interpretation of the characters' actions and I found it fascinating.

The narration is superb. Ms. Grainger has a beautiful, softly enchanting voice and it was a pleasure to listen to. Thank you.

Wonderful book very well narrated.

My favourite book. Love the narration though some words oddly pronounced. There are quite a few repeated lines that need editing and the chapter numbers shown on the display don’t match those read out. Overall though it’s great.

Wonderful story

Sometimes lines are repeated but the narrator did a fantastic job and the story itself if well worth listening to. though none of the characters are very likeable but the story is so interesting that it cancels it out mostly.

Great classic but slight editing problems

Oh dear - another reviewer pointed out some of the odder pronunciations and so I got stuck every time on the 'passage' read with a long 'aaaaa'' at the beginning! But the book itself is of course brilliant...

The paaassage....

It’s really worth listening to the unabridged version, it’s stunning. Please to the publisher, edit this book, the repeated lines are very annoying and ruin a perfect narration.

The most amazing book!

When I was told to keep with it I was glad. I was left guessing till the end and thoroughly enjoyed it. The narration wasn’t the best as Frank changed voices a few times. Otherwise brilliant.

Easy start… ended gripping!

great storytelling. overall the narrator was calm enough to give the book a serene tone and dramatic enough at the dramatic parts. it was a living, breathing story.

amazing narration
