Summary

The Sunday Time best seller.

From the ground, we stand. From our ship, we live. By the stars, we hope.

The incredible new audiobook by Becky Chambers, author of the beloved The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet.

#SpacebornFew

Centuries after the last humans left Earth, the Exodus Fleet is a living relic, a place many are from but few outsiders have seen. Humanity has finally been accepted into the galactic community, but while this has opened doors for many, those who have not yet left for alien cities fear that their carefully cultivated way of life is under threat.

Tessa chose to stay home when her brother, Ashby, left for the stars but has to question that decision when her position in the Fleet is threatened.

Kip, a reluctant young apprentice, itches for change but doesn't know where to find it.

Sawyer, a lost and lonely newcomer, is just looking for a place to belong.

When a disaster rocks this already fragile community, those Exodans who still call the Fleet their home can no longer avoid the inescapable question:

What is the purpose of a ship that has reached its destination?

Book 3

not as good as the first two books to many main characters for my liking but still a great universe

Addictive

I can't recommend these highly enough... book three and honestly I'm so immersed in this world I can't imagine how it isn't real!!! The philosophical mien of the text is beautiful and gives you pause for thought so often. And the reader... well she is spectacular. Every character from all three books has a distinct voice and mannerisms... it really is like being a kid being read to again in the most joyful way.

Another disappointment!

The first Wayfarer book was good, the next two just spin-off stories in the same universe. This is a book about 'why am I here', 'who or what is God' etc.. No sci-fi really, no excitement and no real point. The narration was its best point. The more I listened the quicker I had to turn the speed up to just get through it. You can do x1.4 without a problem.

Enjoyable character-focused sci-fi

Another stand-alone book set in Becky Chambers' Wayfarers universe, where her focus is on the characters and storytelling rather than action and adventure. I enjoy these very much for the change of pace compared to other SF I consume, and always find myself being drawn in by the stories she tells. Definitely not a style that will suit everyone, but the easy way they flow ticks my boxes.

Immersive and warm-hearted experience of a communi

Sure, this is not like the earlier Wayfarers books; this is a departure of tone and pace, but perhaps more fully this embraces the reader with the “Becky Chambers spirit” - a thrilling mix of loving warmth and adventure. Don’t be put off by “difference”; if you enjoyed the warmth of the earlier books, you won’t be disappointed by this one.

The least favourite of the trilogy

I found it really hard to get invested in the stories of the characters. Definitely not as good as the first two.

So human!

On the back of Becky Chambers last books which take you on far flung adventures with new species and worlds to explore. This book is grounding. It shows what happens to humans when we fuck up, but how we move on and make it “all fixed” and perhaps makes us better. In a dark world, this book reflects the best of us. It is a book of hope.

Worth a listen

For me, this is the weakest of the Wayfarers books, I don't think it has the same energy as the first two carrying the story and characters forward. I suppose this might be a feature of a story about a society that has lost its focus and purpose, but it didn't make for as enjoyable a story for me. Perhaps I'll come back to it another day and find it again

A little lacking in story.

The second book of the series has been my stand out favourite by far; the third is a little empty, despite being so crowded.
It really is what the title says; a record of 5 lives and their time on board a single ship in a time span of around 5 years. I was expecting every moment of ever chapter for the characters to meet, for the stories to collide; in essence for the plot to kick off. It never did.
The most exciting story with the most likeable character by far cuts off abruptly, leaving you with four downer characters plodding on alone, meeting only tangentially. Its still very listenable, interesting if you are interested in the minutiae of world-building, but don’t come for action.

I love this narrator!

these books are all so good and the narrator just makes them so real and entertaining. I can't get enough.
