About this listen

Inheriting your uncle's supervillain business is more complicated than you might think. Particularly when you discover who's running the place.

Charlie's life is going nowhere fast. A divorced substitute teacher living with his cat in a house his siblings want to sell, all he wants is to open a pub downtown, if only the bank will approve his loan.

Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie.

But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits. Jake had enemies, and now they're coming after Charlie. His uncle might have been a stand-up, old-fashioned kind of villain, but these are the real thing: rich, soulless predators backed by multinational corporations and venture capital.

It's up to Charlie to win the war his uncle started against a league of supervillains. But with unionized dolphins, hyperintelligent talking spy cats, and a terrifying henchperson at his side, going bad is starting to look pretty good.

In a dog-eat-dog world...be a cat.

Wil Wheaton

I enjoyed the story, Mr Scalzi inventive as ever, but ffs, enough of Wil Wheaton! He's terrible! He's ruined so many JS stories for me. Horrible voice, annoying accent (tbf, I don't suppose he can help that!) but his over-acting is awful. And he's supposed to be a actor! I shall be avoiding his work in future.

Scalzi being Scalzi and really enjoyable

I flip between reading so many different genres and I also love Scalzi’s imagination and creativity. And, as always, Will Wheaton is the perfect narrator.

Another great story, very well read

Spoiler alert.

I thoroughly got this story was just great. Intelligent, typing cats, unionised dolphins & a shadowy underworld network of villains. What could possibly go wrong, with that?
The story moves at a great pace & feels like it flows well from the build up to the end. The story was a really good length. I hope there might be more, but the sorry does seem to end with a definite finale.
Another excellent performance from Will Wheaton, who really gets John Scalzi’s work.

Tickled

So happy to have stumbled upon this. The cover art caught my eye and Will Wheaton as the narrator made it a 'must listen' for me. What a fabulously funny concept and hilariously written story. So, now I have discovered John Scalzi, what should I listen to next!?

What does it take to become a Villian?

Did I download this book just because it was narrated by Wil Wheaton? Yes. Did I also enjoy the book? Yes. Really enjoyed the story and what it takes to be a starter villan. Also cats.
