About this listen

A brand-new production of Andy Weir’s modern sci-fi classic, narrated by the incomparable Wil Wheaton, and featuring bonus content from the writings of Mark Watney.

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills - and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit - he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

Wil Wheaton, who has lent his voice to sci-fi blockbusters like Ready Player One and Redshirts, breathes new life (and plenty of sarcasm) into the iconic character of Mark Watney, making this edition a must-listen for both longtime fans of The Martian and new listeners alike.

BONUS MATERIAL: This edition includes the following extras:

  • “Diary of an AssCan” - Mark Watney, new astronaut
  • “I Made It!” - A happy letter to Mom
  • “Car Trouble” - A somewhat sad letter to Mom
  • “The Earthling” - A postscript. *Available for the first time in this recording

exceptional

I don't know what I was expecting from this book, but it certainly wasn't to be absolutely gripped from the off. Mark Watley is such a well rounded, brilliantly written character that I felt affection for him by the end of his first log, the "science bits " are given so simply and straightforward that you are aware of how complicated and mammoth the task is, but also that you're following not being left behind. I have never wanted a fictional character to be rescued so much, but at the same time wanted him to stay so the book wouldn't be over. highly recommend.

Completely absorbing, even for a non-fan of sci-fi

I absolutely loved this. I had seen the film with Matt Damon previously, though to be honest I couldn't remember much about it. I seemed to remember it was something about growing potatoes on Mars. But the book was so much more than that, and I'm so pleased I decided to listen to it. I'm in no way a scientist and not even a fan of sci-fi, but it was gripping, fascinating and wonderfully well narrated.

Faultless

Attention grabbing storyline. We watched the film first, but it didn't detract from the book, which is much better, absolutely enhanced by the enthusiastic narration. Simply brilliant.

Fantastic

I couldn't help but love this story, I am an engineer by trade and the degree to which the 'pick apart and put to work' mantra eminates from the endless amounts of nail biting problems that come the protagonists (and everyone elses) way is just astounding.
So too is the level of thought and attention to detail the authors have put into every chapter. It is not just a survival story but an anology on the best qualities required to face horribly difficult situations, a heavy dose of humour, grit and determination. There are many lessons to take with you from this book, as such I would recommend it to anyone.
It is about problems, how to solve them and the practical application of science in that effort. So to me for all that and more it is the most human tale I have ever come accross.
So thank you to Andy Weir and Wil Wheaton for putting themselves to work writting it. All the very best. You have a new and admiring fan in this reader.

Great book!

I didn't know anything about the story before and expected a dark tragedy but it turns out to be much lighter, due to the cheerful and optimistic main character. Even without understanding all the scientific talk, the story is very interesting. I learned a lot about Mars and space expeditions.
And the reader did an excellent job!

Great

This is undoubtedly one of Weirs most popular books but it's not quite my favourite of his. It is great though, very well done and the format works very well.

I'm mostly leaving a written review of this one because Will Weaton gets mixed reviews for his performances - which I think are unfair and unjust. He does a great job with this book and narrates in a style very similar to Ray Porter. This is my first Weaton book and he's a very capable performer and does a wonderful job with the numerous aspects of the book and the serious aspects. I think I enjoyed this one more because of the narration than the book itself.

Loved it, full of depth and excellently narrated

Absolutely loved this book, totally immersive in the journey and looking forward to watching the movie, but I already know the depth of the book is way more than the movie, Will Wheaton was an excellent narrator….. certainly will look for more booked narrated by him - such a fantastic voice, full of emotion and depth!

Amazing totally worth the hype/recommendations

This is always so highly recommended, so many people have this as their favourite or in their top 3 and I couldn’t agree more. It’s so entertaining and funny, loved every minute of it! The narrator did a fantastic job which made it such a joy. I was amazed by the science and mathematic calculations involved, highly recommend even for non sci fi fans like myself.
