About this listen

Nominee, Audie Awards - Audiobook of the Year, 2018

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news.

The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits.

When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved. The UN Expeditionary Force hitched a ride on Kristang ships to fight the Ruhar, wherever our new allies thought we could be useful. So, I went from fighting with the US Army in Nigeria, to fighting in space. It was lies, all of it. We shouldn't even be fighting the Ruhar, they aren't our enemy. Our allies are.

I'd better start at the beginning.

Fantastic humour

The interaction between Cnl. Joe and skippy kept this book on my can't put it down list. The accent of the narrator did honestly grate for the first chapter but that's personal taste and not a reflection on his skill. Loved this so much I've already preordered volume two.

Alien invasion and military humour! Perfect!

A good friend has been raving about this for ages and I finally got Audible and listened to it. It didn't disappoint. Great story, loved the military humour and the narrator is perfect for the many roles. Already started on book 2. Keep them coming.

Starting over

Having finished all 15 books I have started over. Great entertainment and generate so much thought on what future advances in technology may bring for the human race.

excellent series

I have to admit that for the first couple of chapters I didnt think this was my cup of tea. However I got hooked and it is my favourite scifi series. I laughed out loud and every book just got better. I still haven't really found a series quite like this one. Thoroughly entertaining with laugh out loud moments. fantastic narrator

Great Military science fiction

This is a new author to me and boy is it a good book. When the Ruhar attack Earth on Columbus day it is bad, when the Kristang rescue is it is much worse. Now we have gone from minding our own business to fighting on the wrong side of an intergalactic war. Joe Bishop is just a private soldier on leave when it starts and a Ruhar dropship crashes in his home town. Now he is on an alien planet courtesy of the Kristang, promoted and then imprisoned he meet Skippy the magnificent a sentient million year old AI with an attitude problem, a jailbreak later and he is now in command of a captured starship. Loved the story, loved the byplay between Joe and Skippy and loved R C Bray as narrator. Worth more than 5 stars and have already bought book 2.

Hilarious A+++

I don't write reviews usually but this book may be the funniest sci fi I've ever listened too. It's currently free to listen to, you won't be disappointed.

Kept buying more credits

Great book. Couldn’t stop listening. In fact I bought more credits (something I had never done before) to keep listening to the series.
