About this listen

"NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Pierce Brown’s relentlessly entertaining debut channels the excitement of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.

“Red Rising ascends above a crowded dystopian field.”—USA Today Adapted from the novel and produced with a full cast of actors, immersive sound effects and cinematic music!

“I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.” “I live for you,” I say sadly. Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.”

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies... even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

Performed by Stewart Crank, John Kielty, Richard Rohan, Stephanie Németh-Parker, Jenna Sharpe, Kay Eluvian, Jon Vertullo, Ian Russell, Alejandro Ruiz, Andrew Colford, Bradley Foster Smith, Christopher Williams, Chris Stinson, Christopher Walker, Colleen Delany, Elizabeth Jernigan, Eric Messner, Ian Putnam, James Konicek, Joe Mallon, Joel David Santner, Julie-Ann Elliott, Karen Novak, Ken Jackson, Lucy Symons, Marni Penning, Martin Dickinson, Matthew Bassett, Matthew Pauli, Matthew Schleigh, Michael Glenn, Michael John Casey, Nanette Savard, Nazia Chaudhry, Nora Achrati, Shanta Parasuraman, Stephone Walker, Dylan Lynch, Yasmin Tuazon and Andy Clemence.

The best book I didn’t know I needed

This is a slam dunk, I hadn’t really heard of it and got a friends recommendation and thought what have I got to loose! I only gained Immensely, the world that is introduced is fantastically intricate and love the subtle differences to other hero figures in stories

Reliving the excitement of Red Rising again

This is my favourite series of all time and I was super excited to see graphic audio bring it to life. Overall the performance was extremely enjoyable, I think every fan of the series should have a listen. In my opinion it just highlights how amazing these books would be in a cinema format, at times I felt like I was in the same room as the characters and could picture the scenes so clearly.

The voice actor for Darrow did a phenomenal job, the switch between his red and gold self was seamless, and as well as his interactions with the other characters. I also really enjoyed Mustang and Nero.

Some of the other reviews have highlighted the discrepancies with the accents which I do agree with, would have preferred Irish actors for some of the red characters as it really does distract from the performance, particularly Eo and Harmony. Another issue I found was some of the voice actors for characters like Cassius, Jackal and Fitchner sounded older than the characters actually are, it did throw me off at times, especially for Cassius. I would hope this could be changed for the next book. I wasn't the biggest fan of Roque either, he didn't quite sound as I imagined him but that may be down to personal preference.

But overall I had an amazing time listening to this, even though I've read the series about 3 times already, this stopped me in my tracks more than once. I genuinely am looking forward to Golden Son.

Loved the cast

The world building is amazing and easy to follow. The cast really sold me this audiobook though. All of their voices are pleasing to your ears and they help you immerse yourself into this world. Can’t wait till I can get onto part 2!

Brilliant story, voice acting and production value

"A Movie in Your Mind" ..yes it is! Quite apart from Pierce Browns brilliant writing and story, this dramatised production was a joy to listen to. Well worth the double credits. Production gets better too as you progress through the books and the voice actors really shine! I've listened to 100's of scifi stories and the wrong narrator can kill a book - here all parts 'fit" and are played brilliantly. I like to multitask and the issue I face is that it becomes so immersive I stop concentrating on the task at hand. I binged the first two books then listened to 'Red Rising: Sons of Aries'. I am about to start the third book..
Hats off to Graphic Audio!

Surprised by how good the Dramatised Version is

Book is a little predictable so far but really enjoying it. Everyone is comparing it to Spartacus and yeah Roman theme, slaves I get it, but it’s NOT Spartacus. Well worth a punt

An Excellent Retelling of One of My Favourites

I wasn't sure what I'd make of a cast narrating Red Rising. Tim Gérard Reynolds did such an outstanding job in the first audio book release.

I'm happy to say this was amazing. They captured each character perfectly. the music and sound effects add a new layer of detail that enhances the listening experience.

I've just downloaded part 2. Looking forward to getting started.

Music

i love the story, ive listened to the books numerous times and love them, so I thought I would try the dramatise version, let down to say the least there is just far to much background music, I personally found it frustrating and couldn't keep listening.

if it was just the sound effects, all the different voice actors and the occasional song like the hanging tree it would've been perfect. all the music just in normal conversation ruins it completely.
