About this listen

A fresh approach to matters of the heart, teaching us that success in love need never again be just a matter of luck.

Love has a history and we ride - sometimes rather helplessly - on its currents. Since around 1750, we have been living in a highly distinctive era in the history of love that we can call Romanticism. And it has been a disaster for love.

Relationships challenges the assumptions of the Romantic view of love. It shows how to develop new attitudes that can lead to a psychologically mature vision of love:

  • That it is okay that love and sex may not always belong together
  • That discussing money early on, in a serious way, is not a betrayal of love
  • That realizing that we are rather flawed, and our partner is too, is of huge benefit to a couple
  • That we will never find everything we need in another person, nor they in us
  • That spending two hours discussing whether bathroom towels should be hung up or can be left on the floor has its own dignity

Full of applied real-life examples, and enlivened throughout with humor and cultural anecdote, this innovative guide paves the way to a new, brighter future for love.

Especially in the new generation, something else is expected from love and we get confused as to what it should look like. often we leave at the sign of any issues, I was one of those people! it's been a great book to help ground me and set my boundaries for romantic relationships

A great grounding for love.

Listened straight through and then listened again. I found this easy to follow with well placed anecdotes and wry humour, but also incredibly helpful in understanding why having a successful and happy relationship can seem so hard. I should have listened to this 30 years ago!

Really helpful

Very useful and mentally healthy approach to relationships. I found the perspective on Classical vs Romantic love very helpful in navigating my own relationships. In particular, becoming aware of Romanticism as a movement, its roots and assumptions was very healing.

The performance isn’t good, sadly. If you listen with earphones, you’ll notice a bit of echo. The voice actor speaks too fast and at times doesn’t properly produce some words. As someone who isn’t a native English speaker this was a challenge.

Eye-opening perspective on relationships

Everyone should read or listen to this book, probably some of the most helpful things I’ve ever heard! Changed my life and hopefully my partners life as a result!

Essential

A very insightful and refreshing overview of relationships. As someone who has only ever really known the "romantic" view of love, this book has helped me open my eyes to the possibility that view is flawed and there are other ways of seeing ones relationship.

I wish I'd read this years ago
