About this listen

The Stormlight Archive saga continues in Rhythm of War, the sensational fourth book in Brandon Sanderson's #1 New York Times bestselling series.

After forming a coalition of human resistance against the enemy invasion, Dalinar Kholin and his Knights Radiant have spent a year fighting a protracted, brutal war. Neither side has gained an advantage, and the threat of a betrayal by Dalinar's crafty ally Taravangian looms over every strategic move.

Now, as new technological discoveries by Navani Kholin's scholars begin to change the face of the war, the enemy prepares a bold and dangerous operation. The arms race that follows will challenge the very core of the Radiant ideals, and potentially reveal the secrets of the ancient tower that was once the heart of their strength.

At the same time that Kaladin Stormblessed must come to grips with his changing role within the Knights Radiant, his Windrunners face their own problem: As more and more deadly enemy Fused awaken to wage war, no more honorspren are willing to bond with humans to increase the number of Radiants. Adolin and Shallan must lead the coalition's envoy to the honorspren stronghold of Lasting Integrity and either convince the spren to join the cause against the evil god Odium, or personally face the storm of failure.

After relistening to all four full books in the Stormlight archive series in the last 3 weeks, I decided to review with them all fresh in mind.

Sanderson has recently become my absolute favourite author. His worldbuilding is excellent and engaging, his magic-system with the surges, fabrials and shards is thoughtprovoking and deep. In this book, Sanderson expands hugely with explanations of the magic and laws of Roshar (and by proxy, the Cosmere).
For some people this book may be too slow to keep interest up. Especially after the previous books, who in my opinion had a much faster pace. For me, this was excellent. I loved the focus on exploring and explaning the fabrials, lights, tones, spren, fused and listener/singer culture. Not to mention the characters and their journey of growth.
Some reviews I read before reading this book noted that some of the characters (primarily Kaladin) were depressing to follow. I find myself agreeing with that statement, but not in a bad way. The way battleshock and PTSD is depicted is humanising and relatable in ways many pieces of media fail. His journey and destination was bitter and trudging. I want to say bittersweet.
All in all, easily one of the 10 best books I've ever read.

deep lore and good depiction of trauma

Another great cosmere book. Wasn't as excited for Shelan chapters breaking the pacing this book.

This was sensational. A rollercoaster. By now would we expect anything else from Brandon Sanderson? Of course not.

Amazing. Of course.

This is the first Stormlight Archive book I got at launch and I'm devastated I have to wait so long until the next one.

Bar a couple of data corruptions early on in the book, I thoroughly enjoyed this as much as the last 3 (and the 2 novellas!).

A great story being told here.
