Weaker than usual, but Nigel always BRILLIANT

This isn’t as strong a story as most RRs, but Nigel Anthony is consistently fabulous with so many voices it’s hard to believe it’s one man! Enjoyed as usual.

A good but not classic Wexford

Moments of real stomach churning anxiety lots of twists but the unbelievable elements don’t make sense until the very end. And that lack credibility in parts of the story make it hard to enjoy at times. Well read and 7/10

Benny Hill

I had worked out some of the plot early on but didn’t stop my enjoyment of this book. I enjoy the depth of visual descriptions- really brings it to life.

I like listening to Nigel and all his different voices. How does he remember them all? Although, my partner overheard and started to chuckle. When I asked him what he found so amusing he replied that he sounded like Benny Hill characters - I couldn’t get that out of my head after that (because he was right) 😀

Solid Wexford novel

This is something of a departure from the majority of the Chief Inspector Wexford series, in that for the most part it is not about a murder. There is the discovery of a corpse at the beginning and whilst no one is charge Burden is convinced he knows who the killer is. The majority of the story follows the kidnapping of 5 people by an ecological group who are opposed to a new bypass that has just been given approval in the Kingsmarkham area. One of those taken is Wexford's own wife Dora. Strange and cryptic messages come in to various place and Wexford and his team try to unpick them and understand what is happening.
Confusion is increased when Dora is released with a message saying they kidnappers will open negotiations. Why was Dora the one released? Is it because she is the wife of a senior police officer of is this just a coincidence? Pressure increases with specific deadlines and threats of murder. Can his team find the mysterious place where the hostages are being held before the deadline expires.

The narration was brilliant and all characters individual throughout. Perfect audible theatre and thought provoking theme.

amazingly prescient.

extinction rebellion must never read this book. it will give them better and more annoying ideas than they already perform.

superb story superb narration. Ruth Rendell and Wexford at their very best. one of the best in the series by far.

Gripping as usual and brilliantly narrated

Brilliant with clever twist at the end. What a surprising climax keeping listener gripped to the end.

A Tale of Greed & Fanaticism

As always, Rendell draws a series of apparently unconnected characters together in a mystery both sinister and compelling. An unexpected death throws all Wexford's theories into confusion and the final dénouement is as simple as it is surprising.
Perfectly read, this one must not be missed.
