Summary

'This well-written page-turner is the definitive biography of the genius of Robin Williams, whose life redefines the highs and lows of the American dream' - Steve Martin

From his rapid-fire stand-up comedy riffs to his breakout role in Mork & Mindy and his Academy Award-winning performance in Good Will Hunting, Robin Williams was a singularly innovative and beloved entertainer. He often came across as a man possessed, holding forth on culture and politics while mixing in personal revelations – all with mercurial, tongue-twisting intensity as he inhabited and shed one character after another with lightning speed.

But as Dave Itzkoff shows in this revelatory biography, Williams’s comic brilliance masked a deep well of conflicting emotions and self-doubt, which he drew upon in his comedy and in celebrated films like Dead Poets Society; Good Morning, Vietnam; The Fisher King; Aladdin; and Mrs Doubtfire, where he showcased his limitless gift for improvisation to bring to life a wide range of characters. And in Good Will Hunting he gave an intense and controlled performance that revealed the true range of his talent.

Robin by Dave Itzkoff shows how Williams struggled mightily with addiction and depression – topics he discussed openly while performing and during interviews – and with a debilitating condition at the end of his life that affected him in ways his fans never knew. Drawing on more than a hundred original interviews with family, friends and colleagues, as well as extensive archival research, Robin is a fresh and original look at a man whose work touched so many lives.

what an insight

I loved this from start to finish and the narrator was very good, I laughed, I cried but most of all I learned a lot about such a iconic man, and how sad he was and how hard things were even when he had it all

Touching

It was a very good book. Hearing the journey Robin went through, his self doubt, His struggles.

A great read. Narattor impersonated snippets of his stand up routine well. I cannot wait till this book gets copyright licences to use the actual snippets of shows.

Enjoyed this but not as much as I expected

Enjoyed this book but possibly not as much as I expected.

Pretty in depth and therefore a little bit of a long haul to the end but can't really fault the narrator or the content. Just it didn't really hook me like other books have.

An interesting and in depth insight into the life and man who was Robin Williams and whilst I don't regret the credit or the time spent, just wasn't a 5 star book for me.

Wow

Best biography I’ve had the pleasure of reading. The world is a far less spontaneous place without Robin in it! This book goes some way to remind us of this fact!

Tragic and insightful.

A tragic story that begun with much joy and much hope.
It is disturbing at the point you know the things Robin put himself through to please us when he should have done more to please himself.

Funny, inspiring and poignant, just like the man

I held off listening to this for months because I knew it would be emotionally charged. I'm so glad I finally did. Because it started far removed from the tragic end, I was able to learn so much more about the life and career of one of my all-time favourite performers. The audio book version is read, no performed, very very well. (Except for the repeated misprounuciation of Marin, ma-RIN not MAR-in...) It's long and a little overly detailed at times but an exceptional work befitting an exceptional human being.

Perfect Reading

The reader is incredibly skilled. His vocal evocations of Robin Williams are pitch perfect. Very well written and researched.

Robin, my hero

I loved hearing this exceptional man's story. He always made me laugh but listening to his story I was tinged with sadness from the beginning as I knew what the end was.
Rest in peace Robin Williams.
You brought richness to so many lives & certainly made my life more colourful. Thank you.
