Summary
When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.
They didn't expect actual mermaids. They certainly didn't expect those mermaids to have teeth.
This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy. Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench...and the depths are very good at keeping secrets.

We Could Have Had It All
This book serves as a prequel to Into the Drowning Deep, which has been on my TBR pile for a long while now. We follow along in this one with the crew and passengers of the ill-fated Atargatis as they search for what's behind the legend of the mermaid.
As a shorter story, I had expected us to be into the action as it were, a lot sooner than we did. That's nothing against the story - this is a good listen by all accounts, but not much horror happens in this horror book until the last hour or so. Once it does, however, it doesn't let up until the end!
Overall, I would recommend this book - I've a lot of respect for the author, having enjoyed several of her other books over the years. The narrator in this one definitely did the book justice for what makes a good 3 hour listen.

Bit short
I enjoyed it and thought it was a cool take on mermaids, my only problems with it were that I would've liked it to be longer and I'm not crazy about the ending for the deaf character. He was a great character and I felt like his death was handled a bit comedically which didn't sit right, especially when the overall tone was serious.
Otherwise loved the disability rep though! Overall it was handled very naturally

Inventive, but Underwhelming
Some interesting ideas marred by clumsy dialogue and a central premise that fails to deliver on the horror.
Entertaining enough for it's three hour runtime but don't expect to be blown away.

short but fun
A short story providing a prequel to Into The Drowning Deep. A fun and interesting take on mermaids, and I look forward to reading the next book. The narrator does a good job of telling the tale.

Enjoyable but not outstanding
The idea was interesting and the characters came through well enough. I didn't find it incredibly gripping though and the horror didn't get a chance to build up a great deal.
The performance really let the production down in my opinion. The tone used by the reader reminded me of a news report or an audio description for the blind - incredibly flat and matter of fact / droning. The dialogue was much better but the main narrative was really flattened by the delivery.

AMAZING
What an introduction to this series! I love the format, and the doomed narrative -- and as a biologisy, I loved the science! I cannot WAIT to read the next book!!

Short & Sweet
Great Prologue - 7.5/10 (spoilers below)
This is the first of the series that I’ve listened to and I have to say for what feels like an extended screenplay for a movie Rolling in The Deep manages to make predatory mermaids feel like a legitimate and exciting threat. This is also not a criticism, it’s more that the audiobook translates very nicely in your head to a well visualised pastiche of intra-work relationships, science and boats, and fish-cryptids.
Also, at no point is it cringe. I don’t know if that’s needed but you read (or I did at least) ‘Mermaid’ and you die a little inside. Kind of like ‘unicorn’, but have no fear! These fish-wives will literally eat your face off.
Mira Grant’s writing is well paced and exciting. Characters are relatively well explored for a short work and the narration was top draw.
