Summary

Rome, AD 63. Vespasian has been ordered to a far-flung empire in Africa to free 200 Roman citizens who have been enslaved by a desert kingdom. But when Vespasian reaches the city, he discovers tensions spilling over into bloody chaos....

Battling thirst and exhaustion, Vespasian must help the Romans escape, their only route to survival a desperate race across a barren desert with a hoard of heavily armed rebels at their backs.

Meanwhile, back in Rome, Rome's elite fear for their lives as Emperor Nero's extravagance goes unchecked. Can anyone stop the Emperor before Rome devours itself? And if Nero is to be toppled, who will be the one to put his head in the lion's mouth?

Great book!

such a great book it's just a shame that there is only one left. I hope audible will continue to put the whole series on.

Couldn't finish it - the narration made it impossible

I have read every book in this series and was excited to find is latest release in Audible as I do a lot of driving, but I was massively disappointed. I have no doubt the story is great, but Peter Kenny was a little to theatrical in his reading and spike names too fast and didn't really convey the characters I have come to love and the accents lost the earthiness I associated from the writing, the history and backgrounds of each. I'm going to buy the book instead and enjoy the way I have enjoyed every other. And I'm very sad about that.
