Summary

The deliciously witty, irresistible new novel from the top 10 Sunday Times best-selling author of Not Quite Nice follows the exploits of two women on an Atlantic cruise ship.

The phone hasn't rung for months. Suzy Marshall is discovering that work can be sluggish for an actress over 60 - even for the former star of a 1980s TV series. So when she's offered the plum role of Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest in Zurich, it seems like a godsend. Until, that is, the play is abruptly cancelled in suspicious circumstances, and Suzy is forced to take a job on a cruise ship to get home.

Meanwhile, Amanda Herbert finds herself homeless in rainy Clapham. Her flat purchase has fallen through, and her children are absorbed in their own dramas. Then she spots an advertisement for an Atlantic cruise and realises a few weeks on board would tide her over - and save her money - until the crisis is solved.

As the two women set sail on a new adventure, neither can possibly predict the strange characters and dodgy dealings they will encounter - nor the unexpected rewards they will reap. Vividly evoking the old-world glamour of a cruise ship - and the complex politics of its staff quarters - Sail Away is at once a hilarious romp and a thrilling tale of intrigue, from the acclaimed pen of Celia Imrie.

Good performance, but not lighthearted

I was expecting a light easy read from the summary, but this has a very dark side with murder and paedophilia involved, both of which I don't find light, easy. I did smile at the start of the cruise section with references to Cruise ship terms which make no sense to newbies. Very long winded too, a lot of repetitive conversations and in need of editing.

OK.

This was an OK book.
Not great, too far-fetched and convoluted for me.
Unlikely coincidences.
However, I liked the good descriptive parts of life on board the ship.

Abit slow to get going....

The story was slow to get going but still enjoyable. The characters were interesting especially the American lady who kept getting her sayings wrong. Overall a good story and narrator's voice.

Easy to listen to and enjoyable

I really enjoy listening to Celia Imrie and i found this book enjoyable as I did her previous one. Characters were relatable and could eve not imagine the ship and the furnishings from the descriptions.

thrilling

the best kind of whodunit where the reader / listener has accessto most of the clues and stays one step ahead of the characters. Loved it and wil probably listen again at a more leisurely pace as i could hardly wait to finish it this time.

Loved this book

This was one of those books that kept me awake at night - because, having started to listen in bed, I kept on wanting to listen! A delightful story with an equally delightful sense of humour.
