About this listen

The autumn equinox is here, and Caitlyn Le Fey is excited by the upcoming masquerade ball to celebrate the festival of Mabon. Not only is it a chance to dress up in glamorous costumes, but - with the Widow Mags catering - the villagers might finally put their prejudices aside and appreciate the delicious treats from her grandmother's chocolate shop. What's more, with the dreamy music and romantic dancing, Caitlyn might even get her first kiss with the dashing Lord James Fitzroy! But on the night of the ball, Caitlyn barely has time to sample the decadent caramel fountain, or help her old vampire uncle search for his missing fangs, before a guest is brutally murdered. Was he killed by witchcraft? Who was the mysterious woman seen following him? And why did he lie about his identity?

Many at the ball might have wanted him dead, from a jealous ex-lover to an old foe seeking revenge, but to Caitlyn's horror, it's her cousin Pomona who becomes the top suspect. Although Pomona has been acting strangely and showing a disturbing interest in black magic, ever since she was given a cursed diamond, Caitlyn refuses to believe that her pretty, bubbly cousin could be capable of murder! With the help of her quirky witch family, a few chocolate spells, and a pony with a sweet tooth, Caitlyn is soon close to finding the real killer. But solving the mystery could also mean facing a shocking truth about her own family and the secrets of her past....

Clean read: no graphic violence, sex, or strong language.

brilliant

I really love this series. It is just as fun as the author's other mysteries but I love the added mystique in this one with the supernatural elements. There is a real sense that anything can happen, good and bad! I am left intrigued with James' father's past and whether or not James will be called upon to work for the government in the same capacity. What this will mean for his relationship with Caitlyn.
There was no end of drama from all quarters. The townsfolk were particularly riled up in this instalment and I felt sure that this would be the end of the chocolate shop after one particular suspense-filled scene.
This was an excellent read and the narration added another layer of enjoyment. I look forward to the next one.

I received a copy from the publisher and this is my unbiased and voluntary review.

A sweet great of a mystery

I really enjoyed reading this book, so I just had to get it as an audio book, so glad I did because even though I knew what was coming I still really enjoyed it. If like me and you have been here from the start then you will know well Caitlyn's cousin Pomona and the strangeness surrounding her and her latest boyfriend. Well the wait is over in this fun and engaging mystery as we learn a lot more about what is going on. Don't worry if this is your first adventure into the wonderful chocolate shop world because the author creates a story that is easy to follow along with and you soon get sucked in. The mystery was good and I never saw the ending coming but I will certainly be looking out for the next book to find what's going to happen next. It's the amazing characters that make this book (and in fact the whole series) so magical. Normally I have a favourite character but with this series it is really hard to choose which I like best from the vampire fruit bat who is always losing his teeth to the small mischievous black cat that gets under everybody feet to the shy cousin's who's spells never turn out right and of course not forgetting Caitlyn herself. All are a lot of fun and a great way to spend a few hours getting lost in there weird and wonderful world of mystery, love, friendship, family and of course a little bit of magic, although not that many spells are cast.
Lord James Fitzroy is hosting the autumn equinoxs masquerade ball at the manor and the whole village is invited. Caitlyn and The widow Mags are providing the food as the theme is all based around chocolate delights. Caitlyn thought the worse thing that could happen was she would make a fool of her self in front of everybody or even worse in front of James by spill chocolate down her dress. But with her young cousin casting spells so she would get noticed, her elderly vampire uncle asking every guest of they have seen his fangs and the gossipy villagers staging a protest over the party, her dress is the least of her problems. Then she stumbles over a body in the attic and a part of her cousins costume near the body and everything comes to a sad and early end. Caitlyn knows Pomona is innocent but with her cousin acting so strange lately she fears she will be blamed for the murder and hides the evidence. Can she find the real killer before some points the finger at Pomona? The more the police investigate the more it looks like witch craft was involved and with the villagers already fearful of the widow Mags it isn't going to take much for tempers to ignite! But who will get burned?
The narrator once again creates magic of her own by bringing the characters to life as the story unfolds.
