About this listen

The Ghosts of the Tanith First-and-Only have been away from the front line for too long. Listless and hungry for action, they are offered a mission that perfectly suits their talents.

The objective: the mysterious Salvation's Reach, a remote and impenetrable stronghold concealing secrets that could change the course of the Sabbat Worlds campaign. But the proposed raid is so hazardous, it's regarded as a suicide mission, and the Ghosts may have been in reserve for so long they've lost their edge. Haunted by spectres from the past and stalked by the Archenemy, Colonel-Commissar Gaunt and his Ghosts embark upon what could be their finest hour...or their final mission.

Great Scottish Reader. Abnett slightly too ambitious with many new characters, but still very good

A drastically different narrator to the previous books leads to different voices, styles and accents for characters.
James McPherson doesn’t seem an appropriate choice for this novel. I’m just grateful I’ve already read the paperback…

Dan as good as ever, shame about the narrator

the story was great as always, maybe a bit heavy with new characters.

The narrator though... If you take over a job from someone who's narrated so many of a series. You should at least learn the characters voices.

positive side. His version of Larkin had me laughing out loud everytime. So bad yet so funny.

No Toby Longworth

As always, the story is fantastic, but for the life of me I can’t figure out why they changed the narrator? Toby should be the only voice of Gaunt and his Ghosts, and I would’ve much preferred hearing him.

Great story.

Feels very strange and not distinguishes the voices and names, Larkin doesn't sound like himself

Missing Toby Longsworth

For me this wasn't great. The change of narrator was jarring, nothing against them but it's like over half way through a show and all the actors change to different ones. The story itself was also just a bit meh and overall disappointing.

Disappointing story and a jarring change.

McPherson is not a bad voice actor, he clearly has good vocal range and the ability to do a variety of voices, however some of the choices here are quite bizzare. Mad Larkin doesn’t need to sound like a Disney with with a drug problem just because he has mad in his name. The space marines sound less like arrogant warriors and more like they have some vocal cord damage.

Story is still good but I really struggled with some parts of the story. I don’t mind the character takes being different to Toby Longworth but I think some of the choices are sadly just poor even without that context.

Great story with poor choices for character voices

New voice actor is not right for this book and sorry to say but nowhere near as good as previous voice actor. The performance is really off putting and the voices he uses are terrible.

There is a lot of discussion about Toby Longworth's potential narration of a new reading. I'd started the Gaunt series from First and Only, and really wanted to carry on through with Toby. To that end, I waited quite a while, just to see if it happened. With nothing forthcoming, I took the plunge (I didn't want to wait too long and lose track of the story). At first, I struggled. Sometimes it wasn't easy to track now unfamiliar character voices, and the style is a little caricature. However, you do get used to it and actually in the end, it's a good job. If you're holding off as I was, my recommendation would be, unless there is real news of a Toby Longworth release, just go for it. The story is great. Major events for beloved characters, and the narration, although different, is still good overall.
