simplistic

Explain it to me like I'm a 10 year old kind of book, although that might be the point of the whole thing...useful for someone just starting out.

best book, not only screenwriting-wise

it's like going to a pub with a great erudite who happens to be an honest and opened matter expert, simply being right and funny, as being on spot oftentimes tends to amuse us, doesn't it?

Overly prescriptive in parts but excellent overall

If one follows the rigid guidelines on structure, the final product would be extremely formulaic. This book was written in 2005 and now, almost 20 years later, too many movies are nakedly formulaic. If we know what will happen and when, what is the point in watching? What differentiates one story from another?
Also, I did not like how the author dismisses those people who might disagree with his prescriptive methods as contrarians. This betrays the linear thinking of the author, with this book being a product of that type of thinking. Syd Field was not so prescriptive and the author admits Field's book (Screenplay, 1979) helped him immeasurably.
There is still some excellent advice in here that will help get a flailing project off the ground. Having everything laid out on some sort of board really helps see what you have and don't have.
The reader was excellent and conveyed perfectly the energetic tone in which the book is written.
