About this listen

Homeless and jobless, Fenn Todd has nearly run out of hope. All he has left are his longing for horses and the strength of his own two hands. But when he's cheated into accepting a very ugly sackcloth horse, he's catapulted into a world of magic, politics, and desire.

Fenn's invited to stay at the black tower, home of the most terrifying man in the realm: Morgrim, the court sorcerer. Morgrim has a reputation as a scheming villain, but he seems surprisingly charming—and sexy—and Fenn falls hard for him.

However, nothing is as it seems, and everyone at the tower is lying about something. Beset by evil hexes, violent political intrigue, and a horse that eats eiderdowns, Fenn must make the hardest choices of his life.

Can a plain man like Fenn ever find true love with a scheming sorcerer?

I enjoyed listening to this book. It was an interesting concept, and I liked Joel Leslie’s narration. It’s not perfect, but a decent listen.

Enjoyable listen

I loved this book from start to finish. The two MCs are older, wiser and just a little tarnished from life, grumpy and worn, but like your favourite shoes. Their relationship develops believably, in fits and starts due to their life’s experiences and the distrust that brings, but ultimately they bring out the best in one another. The undoubted star of the show, however, is a certain fabric eating magical sackcloth horse. Squab steals every scene they are in, with their persistence, odd behaviour and silly antics. I listened to Joel Leslie’s narration and thought he did a brilliant job with a wonderful story.

Sackcloth star

Seems like an age since Salt Magic, Skin Magic - this audiobook does not disappoint!

This audiobook is amaaazing!

The MC’s are believable, along with the storyline and world building.

I truly hope that this is a beginning of a possible series? The end certainly suggests that there could be more - I definitely want more! ❤️❤️🥰🥰

Highly recommend!

I've listened to this 3 times now and it actually gets better on repeat listening!!
It's got pace and action, the characters are well rounded and it's a joy to listen to. The world building is exceptional and you can picture the world vividly. I can't recommend this highly enough and while I don't always love love this narrator (he's usually between ok and excellent for me), with this book he does a brilliant job. I love this and the authors other book Salt Magic and I will absolutely get whatever she writes next because she's so talented!!!

Excellent
