It's the holidays, and the Birch family is gathering for the first time in years.

Olivia, the eldest daughter, has returned from treating an epidemic abroad and must go into quarantine for seven days. Her mother has decided it's the perfect opportunity to spend some 'special time' together. Her youngest sister wholeheartedly disagrees. Her father isn't allowed an opinion.

When no one can leave the house and no one can enter, quaratine for the Birches feels like an eternity.

Especially when they're all harbouring secrets. One of which is about to come knocking at their door...

An entertaining Christmas read. Particularly stirring for Christmas 2020 with quarantine and being maybe just a bit too close to family.
Would recommend for a warm cosy easy read

I am reading this book for my book club. Its been a lovely mix of characters, family challenges, realisations and good old fashioned story telling.

thoughtful fun with a lovely mix of characters

I found the book moving on many levels, particularly as I volunteer in Africa myself. Some of the story was A BIT contrived......surely as a doctor Olivia must have known she was pregnant for instance. I'm passing it on to friends.

so relevant to today and CV19

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I wonder if perhaps those who didn’t like it, wrongly expected a lighthearted Christmas tale. This is an original story of a family thrust together for a sustained period over Christmas. Personal issues abound. Each of the characters are well drawn and engaging. I have occasionally found Jilly Bond unsuitable as a narrator, but I think she is perfect for this book and she does a great job.

I loved it!

Jilly's performance is second to none - don't think I have ever enjoyed an actor's reading of an Audible book more. Loved the story and how all the characters changed. Also loved format of book with different characters' points of view being in each chapter. Found I was laughing out loud at the sarcastic and wry parts. Well done, Francesca - this is an excellent debut.

Fabulous Story and Best Performance Ever

This is just a lovely listen. A book that doesn't require thought. I just really enjoyed this book.

sweet

I enjoyed the story but the narrating style detracted from my enjoyment of the book. Dubious accents and the characters of Emma and Phoebe sounded like preschool children. What a shame!

Great story but hard on the ears

This book is great if you're a nosy sort of person, like me, and like to get inside the heads of everyone involved. I found it deeply engaging and a really fun listen, by turns tense, cringe, funny and sad. Thank you so much Francesca Hornak - please write more! :)

Wonderful peer into the inner workings of a family

This truly was a fantastic story. A story of a family going through the hardships of accepting one another as they are, the ups and downs; that they are 'simply stuck with each other' and building upon that. Its heartwarming and thoroughly well written, pulling you in with delicious descriptive text making it an easy listen.
Highly recommend!

A Fantastic Story

I enjoyed this book. The writing is intelligent and original and accessible. The characters are credible and likeable. The story is fresh though shockingly recognisable after this year of lockdowns. The reader kept a good pace and a lively tone, though some of the male characters were read with irritating , hardly believable voices. I’m glad I chose this book.

So topical!
