About this listen
You are invited to the Alexandria Academy . . .
Twelve-year-old Shad Hadid has never quite fit in. The other kids at school don’t understand him, so he spends most of his time alone, cooking for his teta and daydreaming of opening his own Arabic bakery full of tasty treats. But when Shad is attacked by a shadowy monster, he learns his late baba was an alchemist with the ability to mix charms, elixirs, and mists—and he’s one too!
Then Shad receives an invitation to the mysterious Alexandria Academy, a fabled school for alchemists, where he hopes he’ll find safety and learn more about the ancient science. But when he arrives, no one at the school seems to know what alchemy is! As Shad digs deeper into the mystery, he discovers a sinister evil lurking in the shadows, and only he holds the key to stopping—or fulfilling—their plans.
With danger at every turn and the fate of the alchemy world on the line, can Shad save his friends and defeat this sinister foe?
©2022 George Jreije (P)2022 HarperCollins PublishersOnly, when Shad arrives at the academy, no one there seems to know anything about Alchemy. Not only that, but Shad is having to deal with bullies on seemingly every side. But when Shad discovers that evil Necromancers have infiltrated the school and have a nefarious plan, Shad is determined to stop it.
This was such a fun book to read. Shad is a realistic hero, dealing with bullies, feeling unsure about himself, but always willing to stand up for what is right. When you add in the friends that Shad makes, the group of protagonists is truly one to cheer for. At the same time, I loved the diversity in this book. Once Shad leaves Portland for the Alexandria Academy, almost every character is a person of color. Not only that, but we get to experience so much Lebanese culture and food.
After the ending of this book, I am already looking forward to reading Shad Hadid and the Forbidden Alchemies, even though I have to wait until October to do so.
I also had a chance to listen to the audiobook, which was narrated by Ali Nasser. This is the first book that I have listened to him narrate, and he did a great job. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to his narration, and I absolutely intend to listen to him narrate the sequel.
A fantastic adventure/academy book
