About this listen

Are you ready for your next magical adventure?

Okay, so I'm in trouble. Big trouble. I'm broke. Worse, my boyfriend of five years just dumped me.

What do I do? I move in with my three eccentric aunts in their family home, Davenport House. Sounds exciting, only this massive farmhouse likes to eat men.

If I were a regular human, I would have run out screaming like a banshee. As a witch - I do absolutely nothing. Hey, maybe they deserved it?

I'm back in Hollow Cove, the flamboyant paranormal community, where nymphs, werewolves, trolls, shifters, witches, and other paranormals live comfortable lives away from prying human eyes. As I settle into my new life, I decide to accept my aunts' proposal and join the family business - the business of protecting our town and killing anything that would want to harm it. But I've been away from the paranormal world for quite some time, and my magical abilities are a little bit rusty. Heck, they're practically invisible.

Things soon spiral down the crapper when people in our community start dropping like flies. And when demons start showing up in Hollow Cove, it's up to me to take care of them. Permanently.

This is going to be awesome. I just know it.

I’m being generous with 3 stars

I found this to be very basic, and not read brilliantly. However, it was very easy to listen to as background. Because it wasn’t complex enough to miss anything if I zoned out, it was useful, and served a purpose. Therefore I have it 3 stars, but I wouldn’t have been happy if I’d paid for it, and won’t be looking for any sequels.

Good Story, annoying main character

The characters are well written, so well that the main character is unbearable. The vocabulary could be better, the most common phrase seems to be "stupid bi*ch". the story is captivating though!

Perhaps warn people of the age it's aimed at

I haven't finished it. As you can see by other people's reviews it's aimed for thr audience of teen fiction not adult.
As an adult listener I've moved beyond this stereotypical trope but if you're a young readers who are put off by challenging prose (see what I did there 😜) then this is right up your street but if you're hoping this is a new discovery of witches you will be disappointed. Age range depending upon reading age 10-15.

Voice narration is typical American inflection very monosyllabic with odd accentuation of words but is clearer and better annunciated than some I've heard. It certainly wasn't the narrator who put me off.

I guess I expect too much from a book even a story as short as this. Reading and listening to books like the Hobbit from aged 10 I need depth and imagination and creative worlds so tangible that I almost choke on descriptions because they falling out of the book into my minds eye. Unfortunately, modern writing and people's literacy expectations means we are surrounded by narrative which fails to capture more than surface level imagination.

Disappointed

The story started off well. The prospect of a girl leaving a toxic relationship to then get closer to her true nature was attractive. However, she lacked a lot of common sense. I didn’t understand how she would jump out of a relationship to then get herself involved with another man (even though the cat and mouse game is cute, it’s a very tired and cliché nuance. Very played out). The language was very limited, the story was very flatlined - with very few moments that caught my interest - even thought I did enjoy the detail that went into the description of the different races. I’m glad it was free. The ending was very disappointing and felt rushed.

Easy listen

I enjoyed listening to this .. a great form of escapism. Slow burn with no real fire at the end but nevertheless enjoyable.

Worth a Listen

I really enjoyed this story, I can't say I was on the edge of my seat throughout, but it was enjoyable to listen to. The narrator was pleasant to listen to, not a huge difference in the voices she gave to characters but it didn't detract from the story & she was better than others I've paid to listen to.
Overall the story was interesting, not unlike other stories I've read, but I enjoyed some of the characters who were mostly consistent throughout. Feel like I would have liked to know a bit more about the MC. But overall, I would recommend giving it a go.
