About this listen

Aegis woke up with the powers of a god. But what good is that if the one person he cares for is stuck in another world?

Sickly and starved back home, Aegis is stripped of his memory when transported to the magical land of Strathmar. His new body aches as he arises as a noob warrior lost and confused. Though one thing is certain…an uncanny strength flows through him like never before.

With a shield as his weapon and a bleeding heart as his curse, Aegis starts his journey by taking beatings that no man ever should to protect those in need. After learning to use his ice infusion, imbuing his own weapons and those of his fool hardy friends to slash through high-level monsters, others start to notice something special about him: Aegis can perform abilities beyond his character’s level.

But when he finds out his brother Roy is sick and dying in the world he left behind, he must find the will of a leader and do all that he can to save him.

Will he find a way to connect with his family and bridge two worlds? Or will he fail, doomed to a fate worse than death?

A good enough Lit RPG

Took me 2 tries to get into it, i love Heath but the "dwarf voice" he does irks me something rotten haha.

That aside the story itself is good, it's world is well enough written, characters likable for their own reasons.
Its not a bad little book, definitely not one of my faves but I'd recommend well enough to anyone into the LITRPG world.

As always Heath elevates it to 11.

Carried by an excellent performance

The character and story concept is great. Unfortunately the end product is clunky and surface level. Heath Miller was spectacular as always and if not for his performance I would have DNFed. The plot glossed over almost all of the important plot points and character development, but also managed to have awkward lulls. Surface level connection with characters coupled with the fact that death is a mild inconvenience really detracts from any peril that the characters encounter. There was so much potential, but very little payoff. If you are in between books and this is on sale I would say pick it up! If only to hear Heath work his magic.

Pleasently Surprised.

Went in with low expectations and was pleasently surprised by this book. it's got unique takes on the genre and you're not spammed with stats throughout. some reviews are pretty harsh on this one, granted it's not some genius complex literary masterpiece but I found the story and characters compelling enough throughout. Needless to say the naration was outstanding.

Lee Thal what a guy...

Shields of Strathmar by Marc Mulero. As an audiobook 🎶 it lent itself to @veryheathmiller's intonation & pace when listening to the different characters. I enjoyed Miller's narration, which helped the reader grasp the MC's determination to level-up and progress with the story.

The MC’s powers 🥶 are so ridiculously OP it hurts (if you’re on the other side of the shield). IMO there is a playfulness to this work, which helps the reader push on through the narrative arc 🌈

Another great aspect to the work are the characters around and in the MC’s group who try to form a guild. After Silver deserts the pack, they come together in search of their ally and companion... despite his dickhead behaviour. In turn, this helps drive the mechanics of the world forwards - you don’t expect the tank to take on the role of DPS. 📚 5/5 ⭐️ #BookReview

its all been done before

this book i really struggled with. the narrator does his best but the story is a rehashed gamer rpg novel. the writer did not know many normal words for things so just sounds wrong in his desriptions. would give a miss

urgh no

it's like the characters were written by a teenage boy who's idea of cool is limited to manly men inspired by fratboys.

Heath Miller is doing a good job but the volume between different voices makes it hard to find a comfortable setting.

That dialogue..

Heath's Mockney accent from the Dick Van Dyke School of English accents was not great. But the dialogue is the real villain of this book. Horribly cringey and clichéd with "jokes" about as funny as telling someone you had plain toast for breakfast today. I tried to get through the whole thing I really did (about 1hr 40 left) but with every "oi" I died a little more inside. I got sent to respawn.

I will not be picking up book 2.

Please note: I've really enjoyed Heath Miller's performance in the series that he is most known for.
