About this listen

Are you currently learning the Japanese language and struggling to find some good material?

This book was written with the sole purpose of filling the gap in engaging Japanese material for native English speakers learning the language.

Did you know that stories are a fantastic way to learn a language? This is because learning through stories gives the student context for the words and phrases that they are using. This means that they will later be confident enough to use the same terms or vocabulary for themselves, as they know which context they come in.

Not only that, but what is better than a fun and captivating story? Without a doubt, this is the most fun way to learn a language. Unlike sitting in a weekend class staring at workbook exercises, stories have characters, a plot, conflict, and a resolution. Whether fiction or not, learning vocabulary through stories is a proven concept that has stood the test of time.

This book has seven Japanese stories. Each story has an interesting and engaging storyline that allows you to understand the Japanese culture better. Each story is also translated into English and has a vocabulary list that has been put into a nice table. This has been done to help you to memorize the vocabulary from each story.

So, what are you waiting for? Pick up your copy of Short Japanese Stories for Language Learners and level up your Japanese language skills now!

Disappointing Number of Errors

I bought this book because I wanted to read some Japanese stories to a friend who is a native speaker living in Japan. After only a couple of lines she picked up that these stories were not written by a native speaker and she was able to spot errors in the Japanese writing.

I looked at the accompanying PDF and found that quite a lot of the furigana above the kanji characters were out of alignment making it harder to read kanji that I was unfamiliar with. This feels like sloppy typesetting.

I also looked at the English translations and again found a number of basic errors. For example, it is common in Japanese to start sentences with そして (and) but we never start English sentences with “And”, yet the English translation for story 2 had several sentences where the translation was a literal direct translation of the Japanese sentence structure. I would have expected the English translation to have reflected the English grammar structures not the Japanese ones.

To conclude, both my Japanese friend and I found the quality of the writing, grammar and translations to be disappointing. We would not recommend this book.
