Carter Morgan III hates everything about South Carolina University except for one thing: hockey.

As the starting netminder for the team, he lives for those moments when he can step onto the ice and between the pipes. Unfortunately, his time at school and on the team is slowly coming to an end. Although he'd love nothing more than to pursue a career in the NHL, he knows better than to get his hopes up.

Zeke Cassidy needs a place to live. When he answers an advertisement for a roommate, he's not sure what he is expecting except that it isn't Carter Morgan III. Carter is unfriendly and aloof, and they have nothing in common. Even so, the pair hit it off immediately and become friends.

Carter knows Zeke isn't interested in being anything beyond friends and roommates. Unfortunately, knowing this doesn't stop him from hoping for more, no matter how much he tries to convince himself it's impossible.

This is a really sweet easy listen. Almost too sweet. A different take for most hockey m/m books.

This is a cute, low-angst roommates-to-lovers romance between Carter, a big, broody, scowly college hockey player and Zeke, a scrawny sunshiny nerd. Carter doesn't have friends and his relationship life consists of anonymous hook-ups via apps; Zeke is demisexual and isn't really looking for romance. He knows he takes a long time to 'warm up' to someone and that it has put guys off in the past.

The first half of the story is really cute, as Zeke and Carter slip into an easy domesticity with Zeke showing Carter the kind of affection and care he's never really known (his parents are rather self-obsessed) and the two of them regularly spending at least one day each weekend together, taking turns to pick what they're going to do. I liked that it's Carter who falls first; he's nursing a huge crush and has no clue what to do until a friend says he should just ask Zeke out on a date. Unfortunately, Zeke has no clue that Carter is into him and completely misreads his invitation, only realising the truth when his best friend points it all out to him.

I really liked the story up until this point, and once Zeke and Carter get together, it kind of runs out of steam. They're cute together and watching Carter being so respectful of Zeke's boundaries is sweet, but the main event in the second part of the book is Carter's visit home and his father's insistence that Carter is to join the family business and not to pursue a career in hockey or he'll be cut off financially. It's clear throughout that Carter's family situation isn't an easy one, but it's all wrapped up a bit too quickly and neatly by the end.

The narration by Iggy Toma and Liam DiCosimo is excellent. I honestly don't get the fad for dual narrations in m/m contemporaries as most of the big name narrators are more than capable of carrying a story on their own, but this is a good one; Iggy Toma has great nerd energy as Zeke and the gravelly tone Liam DiCosimo adopts for Carter is perfect. They hit all the right emotional beats, making the emotional connection between the leads really convincing, and the handful of secondary characters are well-portrayed and clearly differentiated.

Note: many of the reviews for the book mention the abruptness of the ending, but that seems to have been fixed in the audio, because the story feels complete by the end.

I actually really liked it. I did find Zeke a bit too jolly in the beginning. But I just loved how their love grew. Can’t wait for the next one.

Fluff and no plot but then suddenly a side character with massive social anxieties who is not relevant at all but still introduced and made into a plot line. Also grandma is forgotten for about half of the book but then o wait grandma still exists!!!!
