About this listen

Read by Sophie Aldred (Doctor Who).

‘Thrilling, terrifying and fascinating’

Tim Peake, British ESA astronaut

They looked into darkness. The darkness looked back . . .

An utterly gripping story of survival and first contact on a hostile planet from Adrian Tchaikovsky, author of the Arthur C. Clarke Award-winning Children of Time.

A commercial expedition to a distant star system discovers a pitch-black moon alive with radio activity. Its high-gravity, high-pressure, zero-oxygen environment is deadly to human life, but ripe for exploitation. They named it Shroud.

Under no circumstances can a human survive Shroud’s inhospitable surface – but a catastrophic accident forces Juna Ceelander and Mai Ste Etienne to make an emergency landing in a barely adequate escape vehicle. Alone, and fighting for survival, the two women embark on a gruelling journey across land, sea and air in search of salvation.

But as they travel, Juna and Mai begin to understand Shroud’s unnerving alien species. It also begins to understand them. If they escape Shroud, they’ll somehow have to explain the impossible and translate the incredible. That is, if they make it back at all . . .

As usual, innovative and entertaining in equal parts. Hopefully more in the pipeline from the shrouded.

Totally held my attention.

This is a classically Tchaikovsky unique concept. Not his most exciting but still very interesting and enjoyable.
However I had to play it at 1.2x speed. At this speed the performance was very good and sounded totally normal.

Great pacing, fascinating premise and excellent narration. Another brilliant exploration of different ways to be by one of the best (if not the best) contemporary sf writers.

Another great Tchaikovsky novel

This book is something special. If you liked the Children of Time series, you'd love this book. It's engaging from start to finish, cleverly put together and performed well. This is going on my all time favorite list!

Easily one of the best books I've ever listened to

Take a completely alien world that life could not possibly exist on. Throw away your anthropomorphic prejudices and then imagine how life could evolve there. Then imagine human finding it. That is what Tchaikovsky does brilliantly, yet again. The final sentence completely got me.

Tchaikovsky does it again

Adrian Tchaikovsky has a real knack for imagining and writing from an alien perspective that I find remarkably engaging, was a relatively long audiobook but a short listen. Will be perusing his other titles for similar works, I've already done the children of time series and the architects, enjoyed both apart from the final book in children of time which was meh rather than good.

This book is a standalone story so well worth a try if you're not familiar with the author.

utterly gripping

I love AT's style of writing and story telling. humourous with a needy edge, detailed and a novel approach to every creature you encounter. If you've watched the amazing series Scavengers Reign I'm sure you'll love this book.

a grueling journey but thoroughly enjoyable to read

This took me a few chapters to get into, but once I was in the story was magnificent. Great world building and some really well thought out concepts. I highly recommend this audiobook. Fantastic narration too.

Very well written and read!

This book weaves a story around a future humanity being driven by greed and with zero regard any other life.
I wanted to know and enjoyed the ending which is my personal sign of a story well written and performed.

The grand concept of how alien life could be.
