About this listen

I never imagined I’d agree to an arranged marriage for over 5 million dollars.

Not to mention that the man I’d be marrying is someone I’d already met once before.

Gage Kingston waltzes into the meeting with the lawyer unaffected—cocky, tattooed, and acting like he didn’t know who I was.

But after we agree we’d be stupid to walk away from that kind of money, we embark on a six month timeline to riches despite the animosity between us.

Now I’m living with the man his aunt thought would be perfect for me while wondering if the woman was going insane before she died to think this was a good idea.

Then the first letter came.

Turns out Diane had a plan to get us to fall for each other while trying to make our marriage work.

Arguments turn to meaningful conversations.

Innocent brushes turn to lust-filled challenges.

And before I know it, we’re crossing every line we drew in the sand.

Did Diane somehow know that we were meant for each other before we figure it out for ourselves? Or was jumping into a marriage with a man I barely knew one of the worst mistakes of my life?

Harlow James blows me away with her fifth book of the fabulous “Carrington Cove” series, one of my favorite series, and as much as I want to say she saved the best for last it would not be fair to the earlier books which are just as amazing. Each book in this series features a different Sheppard sibling, and it is time for Hazel, the youngest Sheppard and Gage Kingston’s story. A story that tugged at my heartstrings and captivated my attention the entire time. Hazel had a special connection with her father, so it broke her heart when he passed away and she continues to miss him. She started her own photography business and befriended one of her earliest clients, Diane, an elderly woman who never married but loved her fur baby and had him photographed every year. Hazel checked in on her to make sure she had what she needed and Diane’s nephew did too, a nephew she tried to match her up with, though they never met, or so she thought. Diane’s match making continued from the grave when her lawyer informed Hazel and Gage that she left them a large sum of money, but in order to get it they needed to marry and stay married for six months, live together too. Gage was stand-offish with her, not even mentioning the encounter they had in town, but they agree to go along with Diane’s wishes, since they could use the money. It was great watching these two navigate their new relationship, husband and wife in name only, but there was an undeniable chemistry between them, one they could only deny for so long. I adored both these characters, Hazel loving with all she’s got and Gage thinking he was doing what was best for her in the long run. I loved how everything played out in this book, with a perfect balance of drama, a touch of angst, some heartwarming moments, lots of heartfelt emotions and a slow burn, but so worth the wait romance. As always, the writing, plot and world building are incredible, as are the character growth and development. It was great seeing the characters from the earlier books, you can not help but love the Sheppard family. Harlow James, thank you for this wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧  The casting of Erin Mallon and Brandon Francis was perfect; their character voices were fitting and their performance outstanding. I loved how they took each role and owned it, sounding believable and just as I imagined the characters would sound. Mallon was a natural in Hazel’s role, showcasing her personality beautifully, and Francis did the same as Gage and was just as amazing. Both were fantastic performing the roles of the secondary characters too. You could hear how much heart they put into their performance as they capture all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. They are entertaining storytellers and their captivating performance rivets you to the story.

- small town
- arranged marriage/marriage of convenience
- no third-act breakup
- dual pov

POV: An elderly friend passes away and leaves you $5.1 million with the stipulation that you must marry her nephew and stay married for six months!

What a fun plot, right? Hazel is a hopeless romantic who's sworn off men after one too many failed dates. So when the chance to become a multi-millionaire lands in her lap—by marrying a total stranger—she figures, why not? Especially when that stranger turns out to be Gage, a hot, tattooed biker she's instantly drawn to.

Of course, things don't start smoothly. There's some delicious irritation-to-lovers tension and banter as these two opposites are forced into close proximity. Gage is broody and emotionally closed off, while Hazel is all heart and sass. They circle each other for a while, letting the heat simmer, opening up bit by bit, only to pull away again. Rinse, repeat, and feel the slow-burn build (until it explodes). Adding to the fun is some meddling from beyond the grave, with Diane scheming to push them together from afar. Yes, it's all push and pull!

I've loved the strong family dynamic throughout this series, and it doesn't disappoint in the final book. Hazel's overprotective older brothers are out in full force, alongside their supportive wives, and there's even a hilarious prank to look forward to. Without giving too much away, there's also a surprise, heartbreaking twist, but Hazel and Gage stick together and come out stronger for it.

The audiobook is another win. Erin Mallon brings Hazel to life perfectly with all her sass and vulnerability, and her male POV is always on point. This was my first time hearing Brandon narrate, and he really delivered. He captured Gage's quiet intensity with just the right touch.

Can't wait to see what's next from Harlow.

Perfect ending to this small-town series!
