About this listen

The Pacific Northwest is home to lush forests and constant rain, to lumberjacks and computer geeks, especially those of the vampire kind.

Sophia, beautiful and deadly, has spent the last 100 years dancing her way through the balmy nights and hot-blooded men of South America. But when her Sire sends an urgent summons, Sophia rushes home to Vancouver only to find he has disappeared, leaving nothing behind but three dead vampires and a letter with Sophia's name on it.

Colin Murphy, a former Navy SEAL, came to the Northwest seeking a quiet place to heal the scars earned in more than a decade at war. But when someone starts killing local vampires and torturing their mates, Colin takes on the mantle of a warrior once again as he sets out to find the killers and do whatever it takes to stop them, even if that means hunting with vampires.

Following her Sire's trail of death to a small town in northern Washington, Sophia unexpectedly discovers the heat of a South American night in Colin's arms. But too soon, Sophia and Colin find themselves in a race to uncover the killers before the next dead vampire becomes Sophia herself.

Really good but......

Once again this was a fab story line and good characters but the Heroine's voice was rubbish - poor Sophia sounded like she was trailer trash and not Spanish aristocracy! Still worth a listen!

Great addition to a great series

Not the usual way you think of someone becoming a vampire Lord. Sophia had so many twists and turns in the story that it never at any point became boring or stale. Next is Duncan and I'm really looking forward to his story.

Political drama and paranormal romance in one

This was an enjoyable book to listen to. I believe it is the forth in the series. And while it is has a HEA, it also has a quasi cliffhanger of sorts in the form of a hint of the book to come. I had no trouble understanding the story, but I suspect it would have been better if I had read/ listened to the previous books first.

That said, the book isn't entirely about vampire Sophia and Colin Murphy. In fact the two don't even meet until over three hours into the narration. There is some political drama and murderous intrigue involved and the focus is tilted more in favour of Raphael, the head vampire parts of the US and his mate Cyn. To be honest, without these two pivotal characters there wouldn't have been much of a story. It makes me wonder if the series is mostly about the developments in their lives while showcasing other important characters around them.

The world that D B Reynolds has created is rather intriguing. It has vampires, vampiric magic/ mojo, plenty of sex, political drama and a social hierarchy that is quite fascinating. Humans aren't entirely beneath them, because these vampires have learned to develop a symbiotic relationship with their food source. And the specially chosen human mates..... ooo la la... don't go messing around with them! All kinds of violence and destruction ensues.

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.
