About this listen

A deathbed promise.

Arlyn's quest is simple: Find her father and let him know her mother is dead. After all, Arlyn had promised her mother she'd go. The problem? Her father's people are myths and legends, and he doesn't even live on Earth. But despite a long journey through the mysterious mists of the Veil, finding him turns out to be the easy part.

A dream long buried.

After 500 years, Kai has given up on finding his soulbonded. So when he stumbles across Arlyn after returning from his latest mission and recognizes her as his mate, Kai starts their bond in haste. But he never could have imagined that his bonded is his best friend's newfound daughter. Whoops.

A hidden conspiracy sparked to life.

Though the sight of Kai makes Arlyn's heart pound, she isn't sure she can forgive him for starting their bond without her permission. But her love life is the least of her problems. Her father is an elf lord, and his sudden acknowledgment of a half-human heir reignites the same conspiracy that took him away from her mother in the first place. Now Arlyn and her family must face iron-wielding assassins, bigotry, and her newly awakened magical abilities if they hope to come through in one piece.

Arlyn thought she would return to Earth after meeting her father. Now she must fight to save the family she never knew she wanted.

I enjoyed the story although target group younger audience, but with a “mild” non-detail sex scene?! Rather cliched. Maybe only an issue for me as listen at 3.5 speed on audible and am slightly deaf, but found the male narrator hard to listen too. Probably would listen/read next book if need to just relax (easy read).

Goodish

A big thanks to Audible for including this in the subscription as truthfully I would not have paid to listen to this book. But if you’ve run out of credits and like a bit of YA fantasy, give it a go!

The author took on an admirable task trying to emulate Tolkien in devising an Elven language. I felt sorry for the narrators trying to stumble through said language and they did a good job of it.

I would describe this book as being slow paced with a predictable storyline. It is 50:50 character vs plot-driven. The romance element is ‘fade to black’. It is told from several POVs, one female protagonists and two male, all straight.

One thing that really bothered me was the overuse of the word ‘plopped’. Everyone constantly plopped themselves down everywhere. Not sure if the author had a bet going with a friend on how many times they could squeeze it in?

Overall, 3/5

A plopping Tolkien YA

Although the story itself was decent enough (excluding the tedium of the naming and introductions. The performance of the female narrator was truthful painful. Arlan's dialogue was not too bad but the narrator made her constantly sound like a petulant teenager. It was unpleasant yo listen too.

Not grear

The appeaence of ARLEN just hapened to suddenly appear at the start of the story, which doesn't in the book itself.

How did Arlen just happen to appear?

It seems like a good story, but I just couldn’t stand the breathy voice of the female narrator so I just quit. I really tried.

I didn’t like the narrator

Got to chapter 21 and was so mind bogglingly irritated by the heroine I simply couldn’t continue. My mind could not deal with the constant flipping between “I’m tough and
deal with my own and everyone else’s bad stuff” to “Oh my god Where is the guy that forced his way into my life, I can’t do anything without him” ANNOYING from start to where I finished.

Irritating

The story takes time to set and the reading performance doesn’t help at all.
1 male and 1 female reader each taking on numerous characters throughout the story doesn’t make for a smooth and relaxing time.

Disappointing reading
