About this listen

Spiderlight is an exhilarating fantasy quest from Adrian Tchaikovsky, the author of Children of Time, Guns at Dawn and the Shadows of the Apt series.

The Church of Armes of the Light has battled the forces of Darkness for as long as anyone can remember. The great prophecy has foretold that a band of misfits, led by a high priestess will defeat the Dark Lord Darvezian, armed with their wits, the blessing of the Light and an artifact stolen from the merciless Spider Queen.

Their journey will be long, hard and fraught with danger. Allies will become enemies; enemies will become allies. And the Dark Lord will be waiting, always waiting . . .

Praise for Spiderlight

‘A joy from beginning to end." — Paul Cornell, author of Witches of Lychford and The Severed Streets

‘Sympathetic characters, real moral dilemmas, and emotional depth, all shot through with a sly humor that kept me grinning throughout’ — Django Wexler, author of How to Become the Dark Lord and Die Trying

Funny, moving, exciting... Another fantastic story from the brilliant Mr Tchaikovsky. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. If you're a fan (or this is your first of his work) you'll love it

Loved it. Couldn’t stop listening. Now where is the sequel?! More please! Excellent characters, clever writing and even some genuinely funny moments.

Absolutely brilliant.

I'm coming to think Adrian Tchaikovsky is either a number of linked individuals working under one name or a being who exists outside time. This is yet another damn fine novel, this time in the fantasy genre. As always the author isn't content to serve up a generic Dungeons and Dragons sword and sorcery fanfic "epic", although clearly he is familiar with the form. The story DOES involve both swords and sorcery and and first reads like a novelisation of a D&D adventure but it quickly becomes clear that there is more going on. As the story unfolds we find the characters wrestling with the subjective nature of good and evil whilst undertaking a quest which keeps turning into something other than tradition would dictate. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

P.S. If you've ever played D&D and found the Alignment System ridiculous, this book is for you!

Mr Tchaikovsky does it again!

Can’t really say any more without spoilers. Great characters, that I cared about. Each chapter left me wanting to know what happened next. Satisfying ending.

Adrian Tchaikovsky has created yet another story involving characters of the arthropod persuasion, and I still can't get enough of them! This one is very much in the traditional fantasy genre, but has the nuance and subtlety we've come to expect from this author, with moments of humour and pathos. I was also impressed by the narration. While Mr Tchaikovsky may not have the biggest range of different voices at his disposal, the characters remain distinct, the emotion is expertly and at times very touchingly conveyed, and I like his clear and precise diction.

This book is many things - a riveting fantasy adventure, a great source of Tchaikovsky's signature tongue-in-cheek humour, but for me it was most importantly about examining our prejudices towards others.

This is obviously not an uncommon theme in the fantasy genre, and it's fairly easy to spot this right at the beginning of the story, but as I progressed I was impressed with how it continued to relentlessly pull back the layers, how it kept going deeper into the biases and internal struggles of the main characters in a way that didn't feel unnecessarily preachy.

I'm always glad when Tchaikovsky narrates those of his books that have a decent amount of humour in them because he is great at delivering those dry, snarky lines. I think this also helped to deliver the moral of this story in an effective way.

I enjoyed this a lot, from start to finish.

A very effective commentary on the evils of essentialism
