Summary

Instant #1 The New York Times best-seller

A deliciously creepy horror novel with a story line inspired by the Ripper murders and an unexpected, blood-chilling conclusion...

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

The story's shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this #1 The New York Times best-selling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.

Critic reviews

"Audrey Rose Wadsworth prefers breeches to ball gowns, autopsies to afternoon tea, and scalpels to knitting needles. Though her father, Lord Edmund, has forbidden it, Audrey covertly studies forensic medicine...while "the Ripper" remains two steps ahead, lurking where Audrey least expects....Maniscalco's portrayal of scientific invention in a newly industrial era will serve as a fine first foray into Victorian classics." (Booklist)

"Audrey is a young woman eager to use her brains and willing to flaunt society's rules....This mystery pays homage to classics like Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein [and] will satisfy those readers looking for historical mystery, a witty heroine, and a little romance." (School Library Connection)

"Maniscalco has created a serious, sharp-minded, and forward-thinking protagonist in Audrey Rose, whose fearlessness will endear her to readers looking for an engaging historical thriller. [A] gruesome but engrossing story." (Publisher's Weekly)

Best audiobook

The best audio I've listened to ever. I have read Stalking Jack the Ripper several times but I will never tire of this audio. Thomas Cresswell is my spirit guide

A reasonable tale with annoying music

Quite an enjoyable Victorian romp obviously aimed at a younger market - rather marred by an annoying soundtrack of background muzak and a narrator with some rather bizarre pronunciations of everyday words!

Beautifully conducted

The narrator was perfect in crafting out the characters. It is also one of the most memorable novels I have read, and would totally recommend. Suitably played melodies can be heard softly in the background, vividly recreating the scenes in the book, yet by no means drowning out or obscuring the narration. Don't let the title give you the wrong initial impression: rest assured it is not about some Victorian girl stalking and falling head over heels after Jack the Ripper. The plot is by far more enticing than that. All in all, give it a try. It will hopefully suit your tastes and worthwhile.

I love this book and the music in the back ground made it more creepy and erie.
Audrey rose is beautiful and smart. I love her character - she makes me want to be a better women.

Distracting background music

Unfortunately, I found this story very hard to enjoy. It was too historically inaccurate at times and none of the characters seemed to show any believable emotion so I felt disinterested for a significant proportion of the book. Also, this audiobook has a soundtrack that runs throughout. Sometimes it is ambient effects, other times it is background music. I can see that the intention is to create an immersive experience but I found it hugely distracting and, on several occasions, had to go back and listen to the story again as I had found myself focused more on the background sound. Also, if you prefer to listen to your audiobook at an increased speed, the background sounds become tinny and distorted, making it even more distracting. If returning it had been an option, I most certainly would have.
