About this listen

In a galaxy where the fabric of reality can be bent and shaped by a privileged few, and almost any skill desired is a mere injection away, one young man is thrust into the fight of his life.

Tane, a hydroponics farmer with some mad cereal crop gene-splicing skills, decides to get chipped. The operation gives him full control over his autonomic nervous and endocrine systems, plus the ability to install custom memories. All seems well until a couple of days later aliens come knocking at his door. And they aren't the friendly type.

Soon, Tane finds himself on a frenzied flight across the galaxy with a woman who can warp the very fabric of spacetime, her bodyguard - who'd just as soon kill Tane than protect him - and a starship that calls him snarky pet names. He's on the run not simply from the aliens but the whole damn human space navy. He only wished he knew why. Unfortunately for Tane, the answer might just destroy him. Not to mention the entire known universe.

Very good but not great

The story was good. But could have been exceptional with a little more thought. Long drawn out in places not needed. Typical again a story that does not finish. Could make for a fantastic film if changed about a bit

Started great, ending flopped

Liked the characters and narration. However, there was some over sexualisation and gross terms towards the female characters which put me off. Also, the main character isn’t that likeable and his skills somewhat not believable. Ending really flopped and wasn’t worth the time investment.

Slow start but stick with it

A bit slow at the start but stuck with it and pieces fitted nicely, overall a good listen.

Nice ideas. Awful writing and narration

One of the characters sounds like Shaggy from Scooby Doo, and they’re generally all voiced in a shrill and histrionic way during any action scenes, it’s really off putting. While the basics of the story are at first interesting they’re pretty derivative. Mysterious special soldiers who manipulate and invisible energy field called the For… sorry The Essence. Bratty young hero with a mysterious destiny? Who actually becomes more annoyingly bratty, not less… Ugh. I tried. Couldn’t finish it.

A good listen, just give it a chance

So it started a bit weak, but I really enjoyed the concept of it. I'd really love to hear the follow ups to this book, which I think is the best indication of whether it was worth listening to in the first place!

A good read

I feel there is more depth to this world and would like to have more, maybe there are more books coming in this series?

so bad it's good?

it's a hard book to describe .. half decent story ruined by terrible writing. and matching narration.

think of itike a B movie... so bad it's good... or maybe it's just bad... I can't decide... if it hadn't been a free read I'd have returned it half way through the 2st chapter when I realised how little skill in writing the author had... reads like a school essay.

That said I got to the end .. I've always liked a good B movie though so the terrible script and acting was expected 🤪

Good idea. Let down by poor writing.

Lots of good ideas and concepts in this. And what could be an interesting storyline, if it wasn’t let down by an irritating tendency of the author to go into unnecessary and uninteresting details which are not helpful to the plot. It makes the story very slow to progress. It does seem a bit of a school essay type story to be honest.
