About this listen
Book six in the Gaunt's Ghosts series
On a battlefield in the Sabbat Worlds, the struggling forces of the Imperial Guard are locked in a deadly stalemate with the dark armies of Chaos.
Listen to it because
Deadly trench battles and a mysterious house form the two threads of this epic story, along with the continuing feud within the regiment and the fallout from the shocking conclusion of the previous book in the series....
The story
On the battlefields of Aexe Cardinal, the stalwart forces of the Imperial Guard are locked in a deadly stalemate with the dark armies of Chaos. Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt and his regiment, the Tanith First and Only, are thrown headlong into the living hell of trench warfare, where death by an unseen enemy is always just a moment away. The only chance for Gaunt and his lightly armed scouts to survive is to volunteer for a mission so dangerous that no one else dares accept it.
Written by Dan Abnett. Narrated by Toby Longworth.

Great narration and fantastic writing
Never ceases to amaze me how Dan Abnett can paint such a clear picture and make the reader feel so involved with so many characters without getting lost in too much description. One of my top 5 series of all time. This must be my 9th reading/listen.

Please complete the series with Toby Longworth!
This is my most re-listened to series on audible. The original material is brilliant and Toby's performances really bring everything together. Please keep them coming and please rerecord and complete the set with Toby as narrator!

'Sure as sure' is a brilliant novel
Straight Silver 'sure as sure' is a brilliant novel. Dan Abnett continues what he started in previous Gaunt's Ghosts titles; tugs at the heartstrings by building up your love for (even minor) characters only to kill them off. This is war after all. Who will go this time? The WW1-esque trench warfare is expertly handled and is everything you would expect and more. The best combat in a Black Library title in a long time. The book is filled with actions from heroic individuals contained in scenes that will stay with you. Though fictional, it's through the characters' actions that the reader may get a sense of what it means to be a 'good' person. In other scenes, the characters face moral dilemmas with no clear right answer - here the reader may ask themselves 'what would I do?'.

Another Incredible Entry
Each time I finish a book in this series I wonder how the next one can possibly come close to matching it. So far they have never failed!

Best Gaunt’s Yet
Really enjoyed this one. So far the best Gaunts Ghost book yet in my opinion. Feels like it’s warming into the next nicely.

The Cuu subplot sucks.
I really hate Cuu. He's a terrible antagonist and his bad subplot consumes nearly half of this book. I love the ghosts and Dan Abnett's writing but honestly this character's prominence is really putting me off this series. I think one more and then I'm out.

Another superb performance by Mr. Longworth
Don't get me wrong, Mr. Abnett's writing is still stellar, but the different voices and acting by Mr. Longworth is in a class of its own.
