Summary

The Top 10 Bestseller

'Beautifully written, comforting and utterly uplifting, Lucy Coleman’s stories are the perfect tonic when life is a little grey.' Holly Martin

Is a change as good as a rest?

When married couple Fern and Aiden have a windfall, their reactions could not be more different. While Fern is content to pay off their mortgage and build a nest egg before starting a family, her husband is set on traveling the world.

Fern’s not much of a back-packer so, before she knows it, the idea of a ‘marriage gap year’ takes shape. And, as Aiden heads off to the wilds of Australia, Fern chooses the more restful Provence for her year out.

Set amidst the glorious French scenery, Château de Vernon offers a retreat from the hustle and bustle of normal life, and Fern agrees to help out in return for painting lessons from the owner – renowned, but rather troubled, painter Nico.

As their year unfolds in very different ways, will the time apart transform their marriage, or will it drive Fern and Aiden even further apart....

Good story well told

Really enjoyed this. Good modern love story. Well described characters and realistic relationships. Narrator did very well with a range of accents and voices.

Relaxing story to pass the time

The accents were a bit dodgy but I enjoyed the story so it was very good for a freebie! Will look into other books by her. The descriptions made me feel like I was in France, was lovely.

Enriching read

Went in for an escapism read. Left with peace that the inner voice speaks volumes if you listen. It’s easy to get caught up in conformity, and not live the life you wish. It’s also a self care read for the codependent people pleasing human that suffered trauma that’s unresolved.
Very fitting that I found this book at the right time. Which happens a lot for me! Enjoy!

Not for me

I listened to about the first 6 chapters then skipped to the end chapter. I couldn’t actually bear to listen to another marriage unwind itself only for them to find ‘true love’ with others. Sport but it was not for me.

Allo Allo revisited

I shouldn't laugh, but I am sorry the accents just cracked me up. It was funny enough when she whipped from English girl to French tante, but bring in an Italian and a scots man and I was in fits. I had my headphones on doing the gardening and anyone passing must have thought I'd lost the plot as I burst out laughing.
Anyway back to the story, Woman finds out her husband has cheated on her again... so she ups and goes to France to find her estranged mother's twin,, well Zut alors, it turns out to be a little more than that... Well..... souffle-moi avec une plume... all is not what it seems. Come on !!!!
A very very obvious story, nothing complicated, send you to sleep stuff.
It resonated with me because we have upped sticks and moved to France so a lot of it rang true. Except for the cheating huband bit..I think!
I have to say after the thrillers and police crime and legal dramas i usually listen to ... it made a nice change and I enjoyed it's ridiculous predictability
