Summary

Illegal battering of gingernuts and conkers in a murky corner of the playground; a procession of bearers of lost property interrupting the telling of the story of Joseph; justice being firmly done on three malefactors who stole Mr Henry's eggs....

Here are 40 delightful stories about life as a village schoolteacher, set against the changing seasons of the countryside. Miss Read captures the scenes of village life with the humorous understanding of human foibles and love of nature that have long endeared her storytelling to listeners.

Cozy Joyful Essays

I love Miss Read's books. This is one of her more minor ones - a collection of the essays she writes about life as a country schoolteacher for magazines like Punch and the Times Educational Supplement - but still a pleasure for its scenes of English village life and her great ability to connect the reader to nature and the seasons.

Too short

Loved the narration by siab Philips. Funny moments, would have liked to have longer stories

A bit disappointing

This book was not as good as the usual miss read books. It was just a collection of short episodes in school life, not told with the usual warmth or humour. I listened to the end, but the book didn't really keep my interest and it was a relief to reach the end of the book.
