About this listen

Deep in the jungles of Peru, the hunt for a legendary Incan idol is underway - an idol that in the present day could be used as the basis for a terrifying new weapon. Guiding a US Army is Professor William Race, a young linguist who must translate an ancient manuscript which contains the location of the idol. What they find is an ominous stone temple, sealed tight. They open it - and soon discover that some doors are meant to remain unopened.©2008 Matthew Reilly (P)2008 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd. I loved this (okay I do love all Matthew Riley books) I had it on cassettes but soon found myself wondering how much of the story I was missing, so was so pleased to find audible selling the unabridged version. So I just had to get it.

love the fact that you have 2 stories running parallel with each other. The way one moment it is high Tec guns and then it is bows and arrows but as one time line has an effect on one story it also helps the hero in the other. Very cleverly crafted story, with lots happening in both line lines. An audiobook you can listen to again and again.

Fast paced through the ages

I've read this book more times than I can count and listened to this on audible a few times more.
I love the narration with the different influences for the characters - in my head they sounded very much the same.
The story I find magnificent, the back and forth from Race in the present time to the characters in the past along with giant man eating cats, a whole cast of bad guys. Save the world despite being 'just a language professor' and you have me well and truly hooked.
Read it, listen to it, just do it

Really enjoyed this book. It mixed the Da Vinci Code with Map of Bones. Don't want to spoil it for anyone but I couldn't stop listening to it. I ended up sitting in the car at work till the last minute just so I could listen for as long as possible. Lots of twists and turns which kept you interested but not so indepth that if you missed a couple of minutes you lost the plot.

Loved it. Rice is a hero or simply a normal guy doing the right thing. like any of us would do. Right?

One character needed a better ending. Sgt Leo van Lewen. Harsh Mathew, bloody harsh.

love his stories

This book is all about action. Biff, bam, kerpow. If you can overlook the hackneyed cliches (heads always explode like a watermelon, every older person is a wily old fox), and the 1980s view of women, based on their looks. The author says he always imagines his characters as if they are played by film actors and is waiting for the books to be made into films. That’s exactly how this book is written. It will be my last by this author as I found the narration either hilarious or irritating and the plot laughable. I’ll wait for the movie and watch it when I can’t sleep on a plane.

If you want to hear a Spanish monk of the 1530s sound like an AMerican trying to replicate an Irish accent this is for you.

Fast paced and exciting. Reilly make the impossible sound just plausible enough to enjoy as a boys own adventure. Mangan narrates with skill, follows the drama, but never OTT. The story does not need it. Wild and crazy, suspend disbelief and enjoy a wild ride well presented.

Reilly is extraordinary as ever.

Thumping pace, action, adventure, ferocious mythical cats AND Nazis? Suspend disbelief for a while and enjoy the chaos.

Great fun!

This book was great for the first half. Really well described fight scenes and cinematic in its scope. Unfortunately, halfway through it’s almost as though someone said this book isn’t long enough and then the second act branches off into something else before a quick return to the original plot at the end. It just wasn’t sure what it was supposed to be.
In summary, I enjoyed it; mainly the first half, the rest felt a bit like a repeat of the first half with added angst for the main character - who didn’t really react to a personal circumstance the way someone surely would. It’s worth a listen, but be prepared to suspend your disbelief.

A mishmash

So action packed it should have a John Williams score! Loved this book when I first read it and it is just as good in audio format. And who needs the laws of physics getting in the way of a good action scene anyway?

Bombastic Joyride
